A pub chain in Britain has made the intriguing business move of accepting the virtual currency Bitcoin in exchange for a cold pint of beer.

Handy for those who forget their wallet, the Coalheavers Arms in Peterborough, the Pembury Tavern in Hackney, the White Lion in Norwich, the Haymakers in Chesterton and the Devonshire Arms in Cambridge all accept Bitcoin – a decentralised online currency with no single body controlling it.

Brb, converting all my GBP to BTC as I can now spend it on something useful IRL.

How it works — customer facing

Order your drinks, food, and so on.
Ask to pay by Bitcoin. (If our member of staff hasn't been trained in accepting Bitcoin transactions, ask them to press "Manage Transaction" and then "7".)
The till will display a QR code requesting payment by Bitcoin. If you are able to scan this code from the till display using the wallet app in your phone, please do so. If you can't (lighting conditions may make this difficult with some phone cameras in some of our pubs), please ask our member of staff to press Print and give you the QR code on a piece of paper from the receipt printer.
Use your wallet app to send Bitcoins as requested.
Once you have sent the Bitcoins, ask our member of staff to press Enter to get the till to check that the Bitcoins have been received. If they press Enter and the Bitcoins have not yet been received, nothing will happen; they can press Enter again as many times as necessary to keep checking.
Once the Bitcoins are received, the transaction will show up as Paid on the till.
If you need a VAT receipt, please ask for one. The receipt will be for the total paid in Sterling. The payment type will be listed as "Bitcoin" and the number of Bitcoins paid will be shown.
At the moment we offer payment by Bitcoin using an exchange rate of 92% of the 7-day weighted prices provided by the bitcoincharts.com markets API. So for example, if the API says 1 BTC is worth £100 then we will allow you to pay in Bitcoin at £92/BTC. This exchange rate is updated twice per day.

The reason we only offer 92% of the current 7-day weighted price is that there are fees associated with converting Bitcoin back into Sterling. When we used OKpay the fees amounted to about 7%. We are currently looking for a new route to convert BTC to Sterling; until we find one it seems prudent to expect to have to pay a fairly high percentage fee.

Explains how it all works in a lil more detail, pretty cool, although not nearly as simple as handing over cash, to say the least (more here: Individual Pubs Limited )
