TylerL - Rehabilitation Day

I can't believe Tyler gets so much credit from most of you guys.. if he were from India, he'd probably be banned already.

^ this. I myself contributed to the credit at first, but the above makes perfect sense.

Bad thing is, I actually had a guy from india design and redesign my sites (the two projects I had given tyler), and they both blew me away with their designs AND communication.

There' only one problem here, he charges $75 for designs that are worth $300, at least. $1,000 if we where local clients.

I design, and consider myself pretty good but it's not my passion. The only time I can make awesome (think unmatchedstyle.com awesome) designs and have the motivation and mindset to make them is when I charge clients $500 + and work on MY terms, not on some stupid, unnecessary deadline. Designing for me is a trial and error game, it sometimes takes time, inspiration takes time. Maybe that's his deal.

Tyler, do yourself a favor and charge more (tons more) on some other medium than WickedFire. Dont get a bunch of projects, get 2 maybe 3 projects per week at $300-$500. Have people call you, and put your terms. Under promise and try to overdeliver. If they want you to design one of their sites tell them: "Sounds great, I am able to start on your site in X days. After that it will probably take me another week to finish it to be safe."

Seeing the talent you have you are damn right people would be willing to wait 2 weeks for your designs. Now, if you finish before, simply send it via email before the deadline. It will only take 5 minutes. Your client will be happy and will refer you to other people because you delivered. Not because you where super fast, or because you where super cheap. Because you delivered.

Designing and working with clients doesn't have to be a pain in the ass, bring you stress over deadlines or anything. Just put your own terms and work within them. if they don't like it they can go to the Indian that does shit work for 30 bucks.

Position yourself godamn it, be hard to work with, be expensive, have a longer than usual delivery time. But once YOU put your terms, deliver. No excuses.

This ^

Customer treatment ISN'T his stronges point. Nuff said and out of this thread (and his service as well)

Every person in this thread knows that talented designers are not a rarity. They are everywhere. Same with writers, doctors, mechanics, hookers, etc.

To vendors: talent only gets you in the game. It gets you a seat on the bench. Nothing more. It doesn't even get you a spot on the field. And once you're on the field, don't screw up. You'll lose your spot to someone with talent and the ability to communicate.

To clients: when you hire a vendor, you want communication. Obviously. You assume the person you're hiring knows design (or writing, surgery, cars, screwing). If you can't get that person to deliver or communicate, look for talent elsewhere. It is everywhere.

This thread is full of optimism and charity. Both are fine, but the potential for disappointment given TylerL's past performance is enormous. Again, this is obvious to everybody. I'd love to see TylerL pull himself out of this mess. But if the horse breaks his leg, it's time to put him down, even if he's won the Breeder's Cup in the past.

No excuses. The thing is (IMO), is what you outlined above is normal for a business that is experiencing rapid growth. I was there not too long ago when work started to fly in the door (and am still kind of working through it). Once that started to happen and a few things slipped through the cracks

Maybe. But the only work that comes in the door is the work you let past the door. This isn't directed at you, nvanprooyen. It's directed at TylerL (if it applies) and to any vendor who's letting too much work hit their desk.

At least we'll have a third entry for the "Similar Threads" at the bottom of the page for "TylerL Rehab: Take IV" in a few months.

The mods did a good job cleaning up the scammers and shit peddlers in BST over the last week. Looks like they forgot about STS though...

Tyler's having a relapse. Can't say I'm surprised, though.

I believe I've made an apology thread a few times in the past. I always go back to my same old self eventually.

Don't really wanna go into details, but check out my Tyler-thread if you really want to know. Status quo.

The tyler-cycle:

He semi-clears his name by opening a thread like this. Get's hired by some members to do some design-work. Makes some $$$. Renews his WoW-subscription. Life's good. Continues to design for money, but eventually starts to fuck people over as he'd rather jerk off to druids, paladins and shit. Disappears. And here we are.

Just read it. He needs some real responsibilities to light his ass on fire.

The problem is, if you reside in the US you just can't compete with fucking third world prices and offers posted on forums and freelance sites. You're going after the wrong market.

Get a haircut, get some business cards and go do what Indians wish they could and visit chambers of commerces and business locally. Introduce yourself, shake some hands and charge US rates.

Make it a priority to sell yourself and your great and valuable US service. if Indian prices come up, trash the indians for doing what you are doing now (unreliable, frustrating to work with, weird hours, not delivering, idea theft, etc,etc whatever) and profit. It's not that hard bro.

This way you won't be wallowing in your frustration and choosing procastination to manifest it. I used to suffer from the same shit years ago until I said fuck it. but you gotta stop taking the cheap easy money and go out and get yours. there's plenty of business. Then use the revenues to invest in your own shit and diversify.

You're still a dipshit for doing what you did so refund the money and get moving. plus im drunk so I may be way off but a drunk always tells the truth.

True dat. Getting your feet wet and working with people through forums and freelancer sites is a quicker and easier way to get started though. If you are asking big leagues money from F2F people, the clients will inevitably ask where and who have you worked with. Once you have a few examples and names to give them, it makes you look more serious and employable.

Plus, if you are giving people a new presence online, you need to establish relationships with reliable vendors who can complete other aspects of the job. (Page design, copy, CSS coding, etc.) WF is a great place for this.

I have been in touch with Tyler a couple of times. He has been working and doing okay. When I have his attention, I encourage him to settle his disputes with the people he owes money or work to. Tyler will never be truly rehabilitated until he does this.

And, yes. He reads this thread.
