Pretty weird... I don't get why they built all these cities if nobody's living in them. It only adds to my belief that there's something really fucked with the way their economy is structured. If there's no real demand for this, then these are basically really shitty investments.

Some estimates say China has 64 million vacant homes.

They're still pretty new to money and power, sort of like a lottery winner. Their wasting all their money on $50,000 table lamps they hate and Olympic sized swimming pools so they can impress their new neighbors who've already been there and done that.

Amazing, I worked there for a while and the scale of some of the projects I saw were incredible, things that could never be done in the west. This however takes it to the next level.

Must be eerie to walk round though. They should hire out a few blocks to a paintballing company for stag weekends.

China has some serious economic structural problems. They seemed to evolved into a kind of corporatist-fascist nation. There was an interesting article in a paper here in Aus that had an interview with an entrepreneur in China who had discovered an enormously rich vein of coal. Instead of paying market value like they say they will, the government nationalised it with no reparation. It was then given to a business owner friendly with the ruling party. The position of the article was that the way China works is that they mask their corporatist moves in ultra-leftist rhetoric and the country is pretty much controlled by the ruling elite for their benefit. To be honest, pretty much the same China we have been seeing for the last 3 thousand years

I think we are seeing the biggest bubble of all time appear in China at the moment. People have forgotten the lessons of the past in China.

Edit: as an aside, I think China (and our relations) would be in a much better position if we hadn't betrayed Chiang Kai Shek in the civil war.

... was I the only one who came in here hoping to see some Asian ghosts?

Nope, I was definitely hoping for the same!

Looks like that would be awesome to walk through. I wonder if it's fenced off or guarded in some way.

Ghost cities with ghost cars, and ghost high speed boats moving around.

Be afraid, they are the enemy; fear them, not what is happening on Wall street.

Funny how some people who are supposed to know how to create propaganda (advertisers) can't spot it.

This will play out very large an interesting for a decade or two... Since the Chinese Gubmnt is so in control over their media at all times and in all ways, there is no way in hell these facts are going to move the local markets naturally to counter.

It will be a fight worth buying tickets to: The impossibly large bubble versus the Great Chinese coverup machine.

china could pwn usa any day if they put all their dollars on market.
The effect wouldn't actually be as bad as it first appears. China dumping their USD will create a massive surplus, resulting a (likely) large fall for the USD. This would increase the competitiveness of USA industries resulting in an improve meant in net external demand (exports-imports) as USA-based manufacturers can better compete price-wise with international firms. Unlike my country, the USA doesn't import a lot of capital goods, so their firms won't get whacked here by the lower dollar. The adjustment (particularly for the reduction in imports) would be difficult, but not insurmountable.

I am definitely in the camp that says that the USA (and the West more generally) needs a good bout of shock therapy.

Chinese don't have creativity in technology. They just copied or reverse engineering something and make a cheap product. Most of chinese product will be failed after some times. These things would be also same :D

I dunno... The Chinese are light-years ahead of the US in education, especially in areas like math.

I have seen a figure somewhere that they are now putting out 25 Graduated Engineers for every 1 of ours.

You can't tell me that such as society will keep making rubber chickens and tainted drywall forever...
