Buying a Diamond Ring

Did she say she wanted yellow gold? Unless she specifically said it then Platinum is the way to go or white gold if you wanna save some money. Either way you need to up your budget brah, if you're looking at Ice.com you might as well buy from Amazon...at least you'll get free super saver shipping.

Not a fan of two-tone stuff, but it seems better than B.

I got a 1.5 flawless solitare set in a totally white setting/ring for my wifey, just in time to realize that I hate everything about diamonds and wish they would be banned from the jewelry industry permanently. If she's not dead-set on diamonds, you can get something much more stunning in another rock like a ruby.

Ive never asked her but I recall once having a conversation with her where she said that she didnt quite like white gold.

Oh and try and buy I or better color and VS2 or better clarity.

Whoah bro. What the fuck is VS2. Why the fuck are these things so complicated to buy. :( I wish it were like picking up a pair of boxers.

Here in the UK, you would generally have the woman come to the jewellers and choose the ring herself after you ask her to marry you. Much better!

I think this is where hubby got mine. I remember us playing around with the tool that allows you to "make your own diamond" and it spits out the price while your doing it.

So Blue Nile > Ice ?

LOL, I just remembered, theres a strip joint in my city called Blue Nile.

Bloody hell. That just screwed up the romantic aspect of it.

I rarely feel sorry for men but I do with this scenario. You either have to be romantic and mostly likely completely screw up what she wants or practical and give her a ring that she'll really want to wear on her finger for the rest of her life. The most important factor is the shape. If you get the shape right the rest you can add in later with her around (the setting, the additional matching band if there is one). It was very important to me to have a princess cut, she may want round or marquise... If she's very eclectic she may want one of those yellow or pink diamonds that the stars are wearing, but that's really really risky. Does she have a sister or a best friend that you can trust with the secret? But even that's risky, I'm not sure my friend would have known I wanted the princess cut.

I did. She is awesome.
You are a keeper! I love looking at jewelry and will help you. Here are my favorite pics in your price range:

1/2 Carat Round & Baguette Diamond 14K White Gold Anniversary Band

1/2 Carat Round & Baguette Diamond 14K Yellow Gold Anniversary Band

I love the creativity of this piece. You notice the tiny beads around the stones in the setting? This makes it a Tuscan revival piece, which was popular in the Victorian age and became popular again in the 1990s. I have several pieces in this style.

This is a beautiful piece. I love princess cut stones.

3/4 Carat Diamond Eternity Band 18K Yellow Gold

Comprehend much? He did say "non-engagement diamond ring".

How about just a single stone in her favorite cut? Would look more impressive.

Austin forget the rest, Diamond Engagement Rings, Discount Engagement Rings has the best prices and selection I've seen, and they have tutorials to teach you how to pick a nice diamond. The other places usually just say "buy this ring with our ACME diamond in it" or are more expensive. Your lady will love you for being a romantic, I wish you the best. I'm in the market for a ring too. Been studying these companies for 18 months strong.

A) this is something she'll wear for the rest of her life (you hope). It's worth asking her friends for their advice, or at least looking to see what they have; that should give you an idea of what she might like.

B) this is not a small purchase. To me, it's worth reading a bit about diamonds before you buy one. The link I posted before Diamond/engagement ring considerations is an awesome, easy to read summary about diamonds, and offers tons of practical buying advice. I would have spent way more than I did, and gotten a shittier diamond if I hadn't spent the time with that thread.

Seriously, whatever amount you spend, you can get something better if you educate yourself.

FWIW; I paid about $7K for my diamond; after it was set, it was appraised (for insurance) at $10K, and the setting was a $600 tiffany style platinum setting. The jeweler who appraised it told me that he would sell my ring for $11K. So I effectively saved 40% or so (or bought a 40% bigger diamond), by reading that thread.

Why has no one mentioned that you can get lab diamonds for dirt cheap? Does your diamond really need to be dug out the ground by poor africans and sold by the worlds largest price controlled cartel (debeers). DeBeers has prices fixed diamonds forever, they control some 95% of the world supply.

Lab made diamonds are perfectly flawless REAL diamonds and the only person that will ever know its fake is a professional jeweler. There is no sense in paying almost 100x more for the romantic idea of some poor sucker digging your rock out of the ground and getting $5 for it.

Here you go Stauer - Loose Diamond Aura Stones 7.5-carats for $149.

Edit: My girl friend already knows she will probably get a fake diamond and is perfectly happy with me not spending several thousand dollars on a ring she might lose or have stolen some day. yaya for logical women.

OK. Now

I have finalized on two. Let me know what you think.

A - 1/2 Carat Diamond 14K Two Tone 5 Stone Anniversary Ring

B - 1/2 Carat 3-Stone Diamond 14K Yellow Gold Anniversary Ring

Im pretty bad at buying these kind of things. A little help.

Clarity: I1 I2 = Inclusions visible to the naked eye = bad.

Read up on Cut/Color/Clarity. All more important than Carat in my opinion, but not all women feel the same. Some of my friends gave their girls larger diamonds, but my wifes ring sparkles way more than most of them because of the better cut/color/clarity.

Blue Nile and Diamond.com were both highly recommended sites when I bought my wifes ring. I think a different company bought diamond.com since then though, so I don't know if they still have a great reputation or not.

My ex cut out a picture of the ring she wanted from a magazine, folded it up, and slipped it into my wallet. Didn't quite work out for her!

^This is great advice except that Stauer is not to be trusted. -They use words like "Lab Made" when referring to Cubic Zirconia all the time.

-The REAL Lab-Made superstones are all way more expensive than anything you can buy at Stauer. -But beernuts is right; they do make stones in a laboratory now for FAR less money than the real thing and of FAR higher (Literally perfect) quality.

...The only way that a pro jeweler would know it's not a real flawless diamond is strictly if you don't look like you can afford a small $50,000 stone. -And most jewelery outside of the major financial centers of the world NEVER see a truly flawless diamond, so most get suspicious when seeing something that is truly flawless.

Debeers, for the record, has more blood on their hands than any other corporation in human history, and that is saying a damn lot. -If human beings weren't a very "special" kind of sheeple, they'd never, ever buy one more debeers rock, ever.
