It hit me years ago that I had replaced every component in a computer.

It's easier than ever these days with Newegg, reviews, guides, etc.

So many off the shelf computers are made with substandard components. Not only do I say thousands of dollars, I know every component in the box is top of the line.

I do enjoy building something out of parts I have personally selected and turning it into a machine I know sells for 3x more than I paid.

I'm sure it can be done properly but I'm never running liquid through my machine.

Some really ugly PC's in this thread. I admit, when I was a teenager, I use to build my own computers with celeron 300 A's, after market coolers and neon lights but c'mon, it's 2011 and if you're not using a Mac by now, you're simply not using the latest technology.

For example, I bet none of you have thunderbolt on those PC's even though you just built them! Obsolete already huh and you just bought it. My new 2011 Macbook Pro (purchased the day it came out) is future proof for a good year before the next model is introduced.

There are no watercooled Macs because they they are built with superior components and it's overclocked out of the box. No messing about with FSB and timings here, it's all done for you to achieve the maximum speeds without having to go out and purchase blocks to keep your PC cool. People say Mac's are expensive but once you factor in all the additional watercooling you need when running a PC, it actually works out cheaper to go Apple.

Definitely. You have to enjoy tinkering. If I thought I could make a living at it, I'd happily build computers for everyone that wanted one (and paid). Or build model helicopters, model planes, model cars, pretty much anything that starts out in pieces and needs to be assembled.

Anybody here have a Corsair 800D case? Those look absolutely fantastic for wire routing, etc.

I've got 8GB in my ThinkPad and haven't noticed it reach 50% yet, even while Alt + Tab'ing in and out of StarCraft 2. I'm with SEO_Mike, having the overhead is both satisfying and addicting.

You won't need a lot of RAM with most games (WTF?)

RAM is nice for programming tasks and some intensive applications, such as video editing and Photoshop.

For people looking into pre-built machines.
Whenever a component is not listed or listed in very generic terms, e.g. 256MB Graphics Card, you can be sure it is shit.

Once you look out for this, you'll see that every manufacturer cuts costs, mostly on Graphics Cards, Mainboards (most not listed item) and RAM.
