I haz made puter

Definitely get an SSD.

Also, what HardSale said. Every time I want a new computer I go through the same stages.

1. I'll never build a computer again. I'll let THEM do it for me.
2. Clickety, clickety, shopshop.
3. Hmm... That one has a shitty graphics card, that one does not even list the Mainboard, that one has not enough RAM...
4. I wonder what it would cost in individual parts...
5. Having loads of fun and curses building another machine
6. Profit.

In all seriousness, getting the parts and building it yourself is cheaper, but only worth it if you like doing it.

It hit me years ago that I had replaced every component in a computer.

It's easier than ever these days with Newegg, reviews, guides, etc.

So many off the shelf computers are made with substandard components. Not only do I say thousands of dollars, I know every component in the box is top of the line.

I do enjoy building something out of parts I have personally selected and turning it into a machine I know sells for 3x more than I paid.

I'm sure it can be done properly but I'm never running liquid through my machine. ;)

Some really ugly PC's in this thread. I admit, when I was a teenager, I use to build my own computers with celeron 300 A's, after market coolers and neon lights but c'mon, it's 2011 and if you're not using a Mac by now, you're simply not using the latest technology.

For example, I bet none of you have thunderbolt on those PC's even though you just built them! Obsolete already huh and you just bought it. My new 2011 Macbook Pro (purchased the day it came out) is future proof for a good year before the next model is introduced.

Ah, of course, thanks. Just jog my memory then, where would be the best place to buy a watercooled mac?
There are no watercooled Macs because they they are built with superior components and it's overclocked out of the box. No messing about with FSB and timings here, it's all done for you to achieve the maximum speeds without having to go out and purchase blocks to keep your PC cool. People say Mac's are expensive but once you factor in all the additional watercooling you need when running a PC, it actually works out cheaper to go Apple.

Some of you guys are boasting some hardcore RAM in this thread.

Daily use aside: Do video games really make any use of it (I.e., 12 & 16 GB?)

Not hating on anyone's rig...I just can't fathom anyone needing it, unless you're running a mini-server from your PC.

LOL I needed a good laugh. "latest technology", in other words you have no fucking idea what it has or the specs.

On Apple's site : Quad core starting at "2,499".

Please

Some really ugly PC's in this thread. Yada yada...hate and discontent....

I get it, you're an abused child and feel that shitting on people or their machines is how you feel better about yourself. Fine. Do it somewhere else. You're starting to piss me off. This thread is NOT about whether or not some 15 year old emo punk thinks Macs are better than PCs.

Drop it NOW. Don't make another post in this thread or I will abuse my mod powers all over your head.

Capiche?

Not sure how much RAM is used by anything, to be honest. I just like overkill. :D

In all seriousness, getting the parts and building it yourself is cheaper, but only worth it if you like doing it.

Definitely. You have to enjoy tinkering. If I thought I could make a living at it, I'd happily build computers for everyone that wanted one (and paid). Or build model helicopters, model planes, model cars, pretty much anything that starts out in pieces and needs to be assembled. :D

Anybody here have a Corsair 800D case? Those look absolutely fantastic for wire routing, etc.

you're simply not using the latest technology.
If you bought any computer last week, you're simply not using the latest technology.

"Future proof" is an obsolete phrase when used in terms of computer hardware.

If your Mac was watercooled, it would be able to overclock further, no?

I've got 8GB in my ThinkPad and haven't noticed it reach 50% yet, even while Alt + Tab'ing in and out of StarCraft 2. I'm with SEO_Mike, having the overhead is both satisfying and addicting.

I'm waiting until BF3 launches and then I'll build a new PC. I have a Macbook Pro as well though :)

Are these AMDs really better than sandy bridge?

Now I used to be an AMD fanboy, but I'm out of this game and my buddy who's IN the game (writes low-level ethernet drivers.. knows his shit) is all about Sandy Bridge

EDIT: Actually, not to hijack this thread, but if anyone wants to make a nice affiliate commission for helping me out, I want to build something Intel-based from NewEgg. Will use your aff link in exchange for help. PM me

you are truly retarded

EDIT: unless youre trolling

You won't need a lot of RAM with most games (WTF?)

RAM is nice for programming tasks and some intensive applications, such as video editing and Photoshop.

For people looking into pre-built machines.
Whenever a component is not listed or listed in very generic terms, e.g. 256MB Graphics Card, you can be sure it is shit.

Once you look out for this, you'll see that every manufacturer cuts costs, mostly on Graphics Cards, Mainboards (most not listed item) and RAM.

You can't really blame them though for sneaking in a few cheap components given the margins on hardware are super slim and have been for quite a few years now. 15 years ago, it was my dream to run my own computer store; now I couldn't think of anything worse.

This will most likely be the basis for my next build...
