What the fuck happened to the hosting industry?

I haven't had to deal with a large number of hosts for 5 or 6 years now, but holy shit, what a difference! What the fuck happened to the entire industry? I don't mean just a company or two, but pretty near all of them.

It's aggravating, because it's like I'm dealing with a bunch of autistic monkeys, and I'm tired of trying to explain to web hosts how to administer a server. I don't even consider myself a server admin, but I know 2000 times more than these jackoffs that provide support. Then the worst part is the poor customer is stuck in the middle. He doesn't care about blocked ports, SSH access, PHP extensions, or anything else. He just wants the shit he bought to work properly, and rightfully so.

Then you have hosts who put up a fight, when it's obvious they don't know what they're talking about, because it doesn't make any sense. You know, I'll get messages from pissed off customers saying, "well, my host told me you gave write access to all my files through the .htaccess file!!!". What the fuck??? That doesn't even mean anything. You don't change file permissions through a .htaccess file, dipshit hosting support tech.

When did general web hosting support get this horrible and inexperienced? What a gong show it is these days. This is why I always stick with a dedicated server, and just manage it myself.

i have had a lot of bad experiences lately too.

It's probably because of the huge corporations renting out dirt cheap dedicated boxes, which resulted in medium sized corporations leasing them and in turn renting out even cheaper VPSes, which again in turn enabled mindless fucks to consider this as an amazing investment idea and lease them and sell cheaper than dirt reseller accounts, which again enabled people with nothing better to do to setup hosting websites and sell hosting.

Excuses are all you hear from your host these days.

The free market controls the hosting industry. Everyone knows the free market is Jesus and always provides the best services at the best prices, as long as the government doesn't get involved!

I say that sarcastically, but really you get what you pay for. Personally I use Burstnet, they're about as cheap as you can get but still own their own datacenters. I've never bothered asking for support, I just do everything myself as usual.

Yeah, same with me for my stuff. Just keep the damn box connected to the internet, and that's all I need you for. I'll take care of the rest myself.

Not so easy when you sell web based software though, and you have customers coming with all sorts of hosts, and every host has their own idea of server administration, etc. Years ago this wasn't much of an issue, and everything was fine. Nowadays, it can turn into a two week, back-and-forth ordeal just to get SSH access to a server, or get them to install a PHP extension, or whatever. Fuckin hell...

Hilariously my 3 day old burstnet VPS just went down for maintenance for "up to 4 hours".

This seems appropriate.

you are en epic fucking moron

I pay $400 a month for just one dedi and am on first-name basis with the director of operations and have my own account rep.

I don't care that the guy down the street can offer the same specs for 50%-75% cheaper.

If I have to explain why, then you just haven't been in the business long enough.

Man, just the other day I had a prob with aseohosting. One of my sites got hacked and they suspended the account without notifying me. I realized a week later as I was going through some of my sites but by then it had already lost its rankings. Hopefully they'll come back but that's besides the point.

I tell them to explain to me why the fuck they wouldn't have notified me yet continued to take my money.

This is last I heard 2 days ago:

"Hello

The concerned person will get back to you.

Best Regards
Karl"

What the fuck, really? These guys ain't cheap either.

Now Liquidweb, they've been pretty solid for the past 2 or so years I've used them with rather competent tech support. I wish they offered separate c classes tho..

Nirvana would be if someone that had a clue about our needs set up a data center. And then actually managed the thing properly.

To me it doesn't appear that damn hard to accomplish. Yes it would cost a bit of a premium, but one would get more and better results from it.

I don't see anything new with hosting industry, the same problems of 5/6 years ago and nothing changed. Only a decent dedicated server connected to a very decent net can make you work.
