Family wont have a problem with my taking care of them.... THEIR friends will and our so called "family friends".... not the real ones obviously, but some will.

And you know people will do shit to fuck your shit up! Just read a story about the guy that had his Dad robbed at night with guns. Obviously I dont think my people fuck with niggas like that, but I do know of other shit people do that I wont get in to.

Any ways, I guess if I buy the more expensive car, I wont be driving it to see fam. I will be driving it around my place only (I live like 300 miles away from my fam). I am cool with my family know my biz, its their peoplez I dont trust!

If you're having some website up and running you can say that you're into e-commerce and if someone asks you can even show them a site. But if you do e-whoring on Craigslist it may be better not to say anything. Virtual real Estate is also a good answer what with so many people making money through real estate deals.

Most of our spending not on basic needs is usually geared towards social signalling, whether we want to admit it or not.

A lot of people want better sexual opportunities, better business opportunities, esteem etc. That's where dressing up nice and wearing an expensive watch comes from. Again, most, not all.

I haven't worn a watch in 13 years and I will never wear one again if I can help it.

I once worked under this general manager who had told me this well worn phrase.

"Under promise, over deliver."

I usually try to live by that.

So I don't sneak up on people but if they don't expect me to be able to do something financially, I have the opportunity to surprise later. Whereas when people think you have money, all you can do is disappoint or maintain expectations. Managing expectations is a large part of socializing.

This. Why not do this instead of trying to hide your wealth?

I'm not for flaunting or excess, but really there are millions of millionaires (I know being a "millionaire" in terms of net worth today is no big deal, but it still is enough to make you a "target") who are quite open about their wealth and don't get harassed by people begging for money.

Just keeping the right company and being able to say no are all you need to maintain a good relationship with those around you without having to resort to handouts.
 
It's not just people looking for handouts. It's the government, it's competitors, it's people who are jealous of you.

There is very little upside in living it up in public, posting about it on Facebook, etc.

As long as you are honest with your taxes, the government knows your income and net worth anyway.

People who are determined to find out about you (like competitors) will find what they need/want about you even if you have no Facebook account and pretend to be living in a trailer park.

I agree that it's foolish to flaunt your wealth (no matter how subtly - as long as it gets the message across you'll get haters) but at the level you're talking about, publicly maintaining a frugal image doesn't make much of a difference.
