wow.

The Atlanta City Council has approved an ordinance that bans smoking in the city’s parks, reports Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV.

The city's ordinance prohibits smoking in outdoor parks and recreational facilities in the city, including golf and tennis courts, playgrounds, hiking trails and athletic fields.

I wonder if you can still barbecue in the parks?

I'm guessing you can.

Haven't these people created enough laws yet? It's as if they just sit around with no idea what to do, so just make up a bunch of arbitrary laws to make it look like they're busy.

more like fewer hobos scratching at the ground for unfinished cigarettes like chicken looking for feed.

I'm shocked to hear you speak so disparagingly about the poor people who were disenfranchised by 8 years of Bush, and are only now just beginning to regain the will to smoke in public places now that we have Hope and Change in the White House.

Homeless people piss me off ever since that time I got my ass fucking whooped hard by 4 of them while I was walking home at 11 pm (admittedly drunk).

If you would stop trying to blow them, they might not get so pissed off.

That's the only job of a legislature, which is an inherent flaw of government in general.

they did that here too, but it is really too much area for them to really enforce it.

the biggest outdoor area we have in central park and you can still just walk around burning joints and then smoke cigs.

rangers on the golf course definitely aren't gonna say shit about it.

smoke on, atlanta!

Just don't smoke in my face - they did that here in NYC and its hard to enforce I think what ended up happening is that smokers are flocking to outdoor areas because they aren't allowed anywhere else of leisure, really but its kind of not what people sign up for when they go to a park - the butt trash was everywhere if you know what I mean.

So, the solution to people not giving a fuck about the littering ordinance is to pass more legislation?

I think a great solution would be to hire (Union of course) officers to police the parks etc.. looking for smokers, this could be a 2 Fer, after they check for the smokers - litter - they can troll for Sugary Drinks.

"Um, dude thanks for fighting for our country and all...and it's bummer that you're missing a leg and half your face...but you can't smoke out here."

How long do you think it will be before the state bans smoking in your private residences? After all, when the costs of providing health care are socialized, there is an impetus for the state to control those costs.

Imagine...

In 5 years, you may be prohibited from smoking if you have children under 5 in your household. In 10 years, smoking may be prohibited if you are under the age of 30, even if you live alone. In 20 years, smoking may be outlawed in homes within certain jurisdictions that have received excess federal dollars for health care purposes. And so on.

Outlawing smoking will occur similarly to marijuana: a slow progression of laws.

The solution is to privatize everything and let property owners decide when smoking occurs on their properties, who can do it, when they can do, for how long, and how much smokers need to pay for the privilege.

Or just let the state keep herding you like sheep: fleeced until slaughtered.
