have you seriously considered getting a 9 to 5 job in the past few months?

you're preaching to the choir buddy. I agree with everything you said. I was talking about getting a well paying 9 to 5 as away to eventually bounce back in the IM world stronger. Bills have to be paid man and this year has been rough for a lot of SEOs. This forum is full of proud people that don't want to admit they took a serious hit, but I see it on plenty of other IM forums... people have seen their entire empires crumble under these 3 major updates. This year has been the roughest SEO year in a decade. Now bills needs to be paid so I'm saying that maybe getting a 9 to 5 for a couple months would be a good alternative in order to fund new projects on the side and come back to the solo game with a better strategy... obviously relying on Google organic traffic was a bad idea but I think a lot of us did it because it WORKED for like 7 years straight. We all banked hard during that time and now it's not working anymore so we have to re-adjust our strategy.. nothing wrong with that.

I think SEO is better as a tactic in a strategy rather than as a strategy in and of itself.

It might have worked for 7 years, but it's always a a bad idea to build an income on the back of one marketing channel -especially what you can't control. Don't find yourself holding one rope with an 800 pound gorilla on the other end who can pull you overboard with a twitch or a sneeze.

But if you really want to make it work, hole yourself up and work like a dog. I can't think of anything worse than a 9-5. I don't know what your living costs are, but I'd rather tighten the belt and get the minimum going online asap then go get a dead end job regardless of how much they pay me. A couple of k a month isn't hard to make to skate by with until you scale things up.

I don't know, but nothing could break my spirit more then going 9-5.

I'm just...

I recently got a 9-5 after getting hit that I don't really mind at all. Honestly, the hardest part has been getting used to sitting in an office chair all day instead of lounging on a couch.

I wanted to learn more about media buying and display traffic after I lost most of my sites so I decided to check out networks around me. I got a job as an ad trafficker at a really great performance based ad network with some highly unique targeting and segmentation algos and patents. I have already learned a ton and have gotten to use platforms that I wouldn't be able to use if I was working on my own right now.

I don't really start until 10-10:30 and if I try to finish stuff up past 5 I get told to go home and if I'm really not feeling going in to the office I can just log in and work from home. When I'm chilling around the office, which is a good amount of the time, I get to pull reports and study the details of both big brands and big affiliate company campaigns alike that I traffic for or work on my own stuff if I want. I also get out a lot more and am not just chilling working on my couch all day not interacting with many people, which has really benefited my mental health.

If you just look for the right job it doesn't have to be a bad grind. I don't mind getting up and going to work and have more than enough set aside for display campaigns that I know for sure I will be able to use what I pick up to make more than enough on my campaigns so if or when I do get tired of the 9-5 then I will be able to stop.

I think a good piece of advice is that if you do decide to go out for a 9-5 then think of the interview process as being more about you getting to check out the company and see if it is the right place for you instead of looking at it like most people who just worry about if they are good enough to get the job in the first place.

"Do not put all your eggs in one basket."

When you work for somebody else, you are actually putting all your eggs in one basket.

In fact, most of the time when people get fired from "generic" jobs, they realize they are actually useless outside of the company since the skills they have only work inside one.

You must have not been banking all that hard if you hardly have any savings at all. Part of being successful is good money management and reinvesting into actual business models instead of being the SEO lone star.

let's just say that in the past 2 years I have been very much involved in the "poppin bottles n' bangin models" (actually mostly fat chicks) kinda life.. not much was saved, I got too comfortable and thought I was gonna be able to milk these sites forever.. fuck.

My question is what have you been doing with the money you've been making in the past few years as an SEO? It never came to you that maybe you should try to expand into other industries while you had money set aside? That one day Googles will finally catch up and put a stop to many of your sites? I mean, they've been doing this for many years now, does everyone really think that they could keep outsmarting Google and figuring out new methods that they didn't latch onto yet?

This sumitdhawan dude is the shit! xD Swoops in from nowhere and puts up one epic post!

So in other words you were a short sighted idiot; got it.

What would be the point?

I am completely, 100% unemployable - and I like it that way.

Yeah, I've actually thought about that before. I dropped out of uni and only ever had a real job for a few months and haven't been in the workforce for several years now. How the hell would I get a job even if I wanted to?

But then I think that even with my lack of "credentials" and workplace experience I'd qualify for a well paying position a thousand times more then the glass eyed MBA's droning out of college without any real practical, boots on the ground experience at doing anything but regurgitating text books. The same skills that let me slip and make it on my own would allow me to get myself a good job if I ever wanted to.

But yeah, what's the point? If you're worth hiring for someone else, you might as well hire YOURSELF instead. I'd hire myself. And I did.

It sounds like you lost the confidence you can create a second successful grind and perhaps, got a little fat and happy.

I think everyone can sympathize with that.

But let's be honest, the job market isn't great, you really don't want to work for someone else, and frankly, who the hell would hire you?

Maybe you should just put on your big boy pants and get to work.

be honest guys, who here has visited monster.com, indeed.com or any of the job sites since the Penguin/Panda/EMD updates messed up your empire? I have and I'm not afraid to say it. I've lost roughly 80% of my IM monies this year with all these goddamn updates. First time in 4 years that I've remotely considered getting a 9 to 5...

Although I haven't applied to any job yet, I've noticed that there are a lot of really well paying positions out there paying $80,000+ per annum. I launched 3 new sites since this summer which I'm putting a lot of effort/money into... I'm giving myself 6 months (roughly till march 2013) to make them work. If they don't, I'm gonna hit the job market.. this is the last round guys. Round 13 between Ali and Frazier.. it's now on never for me.

what about you guys? Have you considered the safety of a 6 figure job and not have to worry about Matt Cutts' cock reaching your adsense/affiliate monies in the future?

I wasted a year reading and learning IM through products. I got nowhere and actually wasted a whole year. I jumped in and learned more in a month of work then through a thousand hours of video. Steel is forged in fire. I don't suggest you go to BHW and start reading the crap in the download section. I suggest you haul your ass on the front lines and start working.

And when you learn don't learn from the garbage that is 90%+ (I'm being kind here) of products in the IM circle. Read books, books written by people who succeeded not through just selling you books.
