Hi,

I’m getting ready for a new workstation; I’ve got a budget of $1k which includes the cost of 2 monitors (maybe 3). My only real criteria is that it doesn’t come with windows 8 (fuck that) and that it has a decent graphics card – I don’t need or plan to play games, but I would like to experiment with some video editing in the future.

I’d appreciate any recommendations you guys can give me. I’ve been working on a laptop for the past 4 years, so my only desktop use has been at work… I haven’t exactly kept up with the latest and greatest desktops.

Thanks!

I'd really suggest doing a self-build or finding a local shop. Stay clear of the big name stores ( best buy, esp ). You'll be more likely to get Windows 7 from a local computer shop; big stores will push Windows 8.

any recommendations on what you would build then? I am not really a techie/computer genius, I'm a marketer god damn-it.

These would make some nice monitors that would fit in your budget:

LOL $1k budget including 3 monitors does not make a "workstation." After 3 even modestly priced monitors you're going to have enough money left over for a Gateway budget PC at best.

I just picked this up:
CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra 2098 (GU2098) Desktop PC - Newegg.com

That plus two decent 21's, a nice keyboard (DASkeyboard recomended) and a nice mouse (I suggest evoluent) should all come to under $1k.

It isn't going to fit the bill for those who are doing high end graphics/video or those who are scripting massive ninja programs, but for most of the people who post on this board, it is unlikely they will use the computers full potential for more than a few minutes per day. Most people want way more power than they will ever use.

And I'd always buy something put together that is ready to plug in play. I value my time too much to be tinkering around with shit I'm not good at. (to those who enjoy it, that is another matter)

There's really no tinkering involved with building a computer these days, it takes all of 15 minutes. If you can hook up your TV, cable box, receiver, speakers and bluray player together, you can build a PC.

keep up the attitude & this will go down on your permanent record.

15... if EVERYTHING goes right and assuming I know what I'm doing. Even then you are being wildly optimistic.

First time; you will likely take longer. Plus there is the time it takes to shop for the parts. Plus the time to instal windows.

Let's just say with the time it takes to buy the parts, receive them from UPS, unpackage them, put everything together, install windows, etc, it is 2 hours. More likely 3 hours. That is conservative. I don't know about you; but if it costs me a few hundred to get it all in one, plug n play; I will do much better with the time spent on something else. Or I could go enjoy life. Either way; I value my time too much. Now if you enjoy it; then do so. For me putting a computer together is akin to spending time in the dentist.

noted, and good points. personally, i hate having to shop for that one magical computer that has everything i want and nothing i don't. i'm more of an 'a la carte' guy.

Thanks for the helpful posts. I would prefer something that is plug 'n play as well, sorry I should have mentioned that in the first post.

Video card does not need to be the greatest thing in the world... just something that can handle adobe premiere. This computer doesn't need to handle anything extreme. Being able to handle very large data files, run adwords/adcenter editors, and handle a crawler are probably the only "extremes" this comp will ever see.
