Google offers 4 Billion for snapchat.

Agreed, I've never claimed to like Google+ just pointing out that measuring it in terms of whether or not Grandma and Aunt Millie are posting recipes on there might not be relevant.

What's the point of G+ if they are just integrating it and pretending it's a social network, but not a social network at the same time. The only thing I've seen come out of it is G+ profiles in the SERPs and that's about it really... Realistically the only way to really authenticate users is to get ID/CC information of the user, everything else can be faked.

I get the idea of "un-anonymizing" the internet, but at the end of the day, that's one of the cornerstones behind the internet. So if they keep shoveling this G+ down everyone's throat, they'll end up alienating people that want to troll and bring excitement to those same services. Those people will just move on to different properties and those properties will then become the new hot thing taking away the pageviews that Google needs for those advertising dollars. Trying to get rid of the anonymity of the internet is like trying to get rid of the dark by shining a flashlight, one area might be lit, but it's only the area you shine.

Most trends are set by the younger generation, which youtube has a great grip on. The problem is there is no monopoly if someone can come along and re-create the service and do it better and the consumer can flock in droves away. Yeah, the professionals may stay on youtube, but if the pageviews aren't there most publishers and content creators will move on, to where the audience is. Trolling is a part of the internet.

Bill Gates once said "Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose." Google thinks it can take on any and everything and problem is failure is always around the corner for everyone. When you've got massive amount of your userbase angry and crying foul over and over, eventually, a new solution will pop up.

Another Google failure - Google Checkout: https://support.google.com/checkout/sell/answer/3080449?hl=en

Closed it's doors cause it just wasn't getting adopted like they wanted it to. Last day to charge orders is on November 20th, 2013. The main reason is lack of mass adoption - a prime example of them trying to force something onto people. With Youtube, they bought that audience, and are now attempting to force it into something it's not.

I personally do not see how Snapchat is worth >10mm

Teens don't want to be on the same social networks like their parents.
They don't want their mom, dad and grandma snooping on them when they interact with their friends. They don't want them as friends following every step what they are doing. Typical teens.

So they are flogging to alternatives. As for now, the hip thing is snapchat.
Zuck sees this trend in his stats. There is a big market to grap.

Aunt Millie and Grandma are the only ones that click my ads and buy shit. The ball-crushing jean wearing, tech startup, hipster bloggers and youtube trolls aren't. Until Google gets Aunt Millie and Grandma to sign up and post recipes and retarded 90's chain email crap it doesn't matter how many "users" they have or how fast their user base grows. They're attracting the wrong people.

Are we talking about the same Google, the one that booked a $3 Billion profit on $15 Billion in revenue last quarter alone? That Google?

Maybe they're looking big picture and don't give a shit about making the next Facebook, since kids are always moving on to new shit anyway. Maybe rather than trying to chase kids from one shiny new thing to the next, their objective is to build a platform that forces the kids and everyone else to come to them? I dunno, I've yet to see Google not make billions in profit but maybe they really are clueless. We'll see.

As far as I can see the only people who use Google+ are SEOs using it for authorship. That's all "I" use it for. ;)

Fuck, I'm scared of it because it's just one more google information grab. Google catches my every slip, whether I know it or not.

I think what you're seeing is the emerging life cycle of social networks. Every generation will adopt their own social network to escape the prying eyes of the generation before them.

So for teens, it may be that their generation fully adopts Snapchat, and they'll use it until they're grownups and have kids of their own. At which point, their kids will find some new network that their parents aren't on, and the cycle continues.

They gather and sell information. They expect today's 15 year old is Aunt Millie 10 years from now. I agree with you, btw.

But as long as today's 15 year old will click on their ads, they profit. They reduce the ROI of their customers (advertisers), but their entire goal is to capture all profits. Google would prefer that everyone has nearly break-even campaigns, with them catching the profit. And because people are so horrible at black box auctions, they have a good shot at it.

I actually think google uses profit maximizing algos on their own advertisers on an individual basis. They surely have the technology and incentive for it. I remember when I thought overture was bullshit, by just charging for clicks. Sheesh.

Also... if Zuck was really smart, he'd allow you to group your "friends" and select which group is able to see which updates.

As long as mom is able to see little Sarah talking about getting smashed with Jenny the night before and the lesbian orgy experiment they had with the rest of their friends, Facebook is doomed.

Maybe we should have a discussion thread on what kind of social network can replace facebook. Then Jon should start on that more innovative version of facebook and make us all secret shareholders. Every shareholder should then be tasked to invite atleast 100 other members.

Then we could eventually pool our marketing and hyping skills, grow a lot, sell out to Google for 2B, get paid 500k each and start our own city in Chile. I know its a good plan

get paid 500k

That would be a nice start for the "What's the best way to make $500k in 2014" thread.

I actually send snapchats more than I do text messages these days. And I've only been using it for 5 or 6 months. Now if only there was a way to send gifs easily. I'd be set.

I believe Vine and a few copycats have that market locked-in.

Not my own, but ones from my phone, like:

mj-laughing.gif

In response to a text message or snap from someone. Right now, I have to take a video with my phone and time it properly. I'd just like to be able to attach the gif in a message or send it as a snap.

That's already possible. ;) Unless you are trolling in which case as you were.
