After re-watching the scene, I think you're right. But then how would she know what happened and yet Joe's boss didn't get it? It seemed like the writers took the easy way out there.
I know Joe is desperate to make this computer and do it his way, but it's asking a lot from me to believe he'd take that kind of action without some backstory to show he was at least bisexual before, something that was very rare in the early 80s.

I'm not so sure he was gay/bi I think he was just doing what had to be done. You can see it by the blank dead stare on his face after they left.
