How do you buy English books overseas?

Hi. I'm living the IMers dream of moving out of my mom's basement to SE Asia, probably Thailand for the ladyboys.

Everything looks cool except for one thing: I love to read books.

How do I get books in SE Asia? Like, if there are tons of IMers in Chang Mai as I've read, are there bookstores there where you can pick up copies of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the like? Or will you have to get it shipped from the US?

Physical book please. My reading speed is much lower w/ a screen. At worse, I'm guessing I can always get a .pdf and print it.
 
amazon deliver to thailand and i also go into bangkok and get some from a good bookshop in Paragon mall, cant remember the name but its got a great selection of business and IT stuff as well as all the usual

if you are just looking for bestsellers there is normally an Asia Books in most tourist towns that does an ok selection of fiction, non-fiction and magazines
 
Pretty much just going to have to suck it up and get a kindle + get used to Audible. Yes real books are better, but if you're going to be a longterm traveler it's your only option. Your brain will get much more used to it after a couple of days.

you either go to an english city center where there's such a condensed sq f/tourist ratio that they do sell them - or you get them online.

countries depend, research - im in romania at the moment and its long history w fraud makes ebay obsolete for me, for example. each country has its own ebay variation.
 
So if I move to a new country, how do I buy food? Or order from a restaurant? Or check into a hotel?

As itchy said, all about the bangkok malls, if you see lots of white people you know you're in the right place.

Capital cities will have English bookstores in most likelihood.

Hell I was able to pick up a Terry Pratchett Discworld novel in the Dominican Republic.

Buy a normal Kindle with an eInk screen if you can't read from a LCD like a iPad. There is no way you read so fast that you flip through pages faster than a kindle/iPad can. Have you even tried to use a eInk display reading device?

If you're one of those people that absolutely must have paper in his hands and smell the ink of the pages then start learning Thai or get over it.
 
Plenty of used bookstores in most cities frequented by the dirty backpacker crowd. Get a kindle like others have mentioned...

And what are you going to do about the recent visa crack down? Going to try for am education visa?
 
Kindle.

Try the e-ink screen ones if reading o ab LCD screen is not for you.

Takes a bit (3 days?) of getting used to, but you will not go back.

For sure there English books somewhere there, and yeah I'm with Dante_0101, like why don't you bring a few books if you are really into it?
 
The cheapest Kindle is far better than reading a book imo, except for reference books. It is amazingly light and far easier to hold.

In Chiang Mai and probably the rest of Thailand there is a small shop called Asia Books (or something similar) for English books and also sections in some other shops, as already mentioned above. Probably something big in Bangkok.

Plus lots of used book shops but they might be full of stuff like The Beach.
