How much do you save to move to another country?

I had a goal of $30k USD in mind, but now that I've met it, don't think it's enough. I do the numbers, and I'm looking at probably $20k minimum (so $25k realistically) from the time I leave this house, until I'm in a long-term lease in another house. I'm thinking of waiting until at least $50k would be a better idea.

Why did this seem so much cheaper when I was younger? Were things just cheaper, or was I just making a lot more money then? Hell, at one time we had residences in three different countries, and were flying all over the place. Or do you just get more expensive as you get older? I can't remember any of our moves costing this much, that's for sure.

Anyway, for all you perpetual travellers, what do you ensure you have for cash-on-hand before you skip over and get setup in another country?

Yeah I remember reading about that before. But I don't have dogs or a wife, just me, nor do I mind living in $200 a month apartments/rooms :)

Other pain is the flight with the dogs. Search flights from Bangkok to Montevideo, and they're all west bound with layovers in the Middle East, which I'm not willing to do. Muslims hate dogs, so I'm not letting mine sit on the runway in Qatar or somewhere in that heat surrounded by people who believe they're filthy creatures, and probably won't even give them water.

So it's east bound we go. Stop in Auckland probably. Few hours, or maybe few days, who knows...

Grow some damn balls and just move

I can promise I've done that many more times than you have. I've learned, lol...

What about cruise ships? I think you can get the dogs with you, but I'm not sure if you can stop somewhere else. Never been, but it might be an idea.

Plus, $30k it's pretty relative, depends on where you want to go.

Questions to answer (personally):

1. What are your living expenses now?
2. What will your living expenses be more or less if you move?
3. What is #1-#2? If it is a negative number then keep analyzing the situation, if it is positive then fucking move.

If your entire income is derived remotely, and you want to move abroad, then move. However taking dogs to Asia is probably not the wisest choice.

How can we respond to this without having any details?

How much furniture are you moving? How many people? Where are you relocating?

30k is a lot if you're moving to Vietnam. It's not much if you're moving to Manhattan.

Move your dogs with a reputable animal shipping company. They can hold them back for a number of days until you arrive and get settled and then can ship them to you so when you receive them they move into a home prepared for their arrival. The company we used coming from Canada for our cat has a facility in Frankfurt that clears all animals coming into Europe for example. They get there and stay the night, get cleaned up, fed, watered, and then put onto the plane in the AM for the next leg of the journey. With the expat communities in places like Dubai, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a service like that for animals travelling through that part of the world.

Is your income going to stop when you move? If you're taking your full income I would say fuck it and do it now. If it's going to stop, you need minimum 10 times that for a permanent move.

Bottom line once you get to $50k you will second guess yourself and think you need a 100k and rinse and repeat. You're not getting younger, and run the risk of a major life event that may permanently de-rail your move. Bottom line only you know what it's going to take.

Pick a number and pick a date. If you're really serious start making the appropriate arrangements. All of those will take time. But if you're really going to do this you need rock solid goals and timelines.

#humblebrag

heh, hardly. Should take me a week to save that, not 5 months. You're supposed to make more money as you get older, not less. I'm doing something wrong here.

Nah, I'm just generally nervous. More than once I've made moves in life like this, only to somehow fuck it all up, and end up in a world of hurt. Hopefully I've learned from my mistakes though, because I'm getting too old for that shit now.

I moved 2,000 miles away with $1,000. And that was borrowed.

Why anyone would need 20k just to move from one spot to another is utterly beyond me.

Muslim checking in. These misconceptions just aren't true about Muslims and dogs. I myself had a dog in my backyard growing up, actually got him when I was born and lived until I was 16 years or so.

In terms of not even offering water to dogs, there's a story about a prostitute offering water to a dog and God forgave her for her sins. For this reason, Muslims are always feeding stray animals in Middle East countries.

If you travel on a half decent airline like Emirates or Qatar, they'll accommodate your pets. Qater Airlines will even walk your dog for you. A friend flew on Emirates and he said they were pretty accommodating. All in all, no one gives a shit.

Doing a basic Google search will confirm all of what I said. Qatar is one of the more shittier airlines but they'll do all of the following while in Qater:

Animals are allowed out of their kennels to walk and stretch
Animals are observed for signs of sickness and stress
Kennels are cleaned
Dogs are walked
Animals are provided a larger, more comfortable kennel during transit
Food (if not provided by owner) is provided every 3-4 hours and only up to 2 hours before departure
Water is changed every hour.

I don't know, but I've walked a dog many times in Kuala Lumpur, and people avoided me like the plague. They would cross the street when they seen us coming, or jump inside and hold the door closed until we passed, or basically do anything they could to avoid us. They weren't rude about it or anything, but definitely avoided the dog. This was a black lab though, so maybe it's only black dogs?

The typical Spaniard will do the same thing man. Especially with big black dogs. I don't think it's a Muslim thing, it's just a people thing. Lots of people are afraid of dogs.

A lot of people are afraid of dogs, especially big dogs. I had a Pyrenees years ago. When I would take her to the park, white people, brown people- didn't matter, they would pick up their children and walk the other way when we came by. That dog wouldn't have hurt an ant unless (unless it was attacking me or whatever). People are dumb and most people have never had big dogs, so they are afraid.
