how can I look broke but act promising?

you're bragging about a pos 35k car and a 1500/mo house... wtf is that, 300k house and a toyota corolla... lol.

you suck at trying to brag.

I think he is trying to say for his age not many of his peers have the things he has and he is proud of this.

I have the same but worked my ass off for it in a 8-5er job and didnt make my own hours and have probably 10 times the responsibilities now so doesnt feel like I make any money...

I would have loved to make the money I do now when I was 20 not that I think I am old but I would have thought I was RICH too!!!!

I agree. A 35k car and a 1500/mo house is mediocre. I quit college to do AM, and at my age (now 21) I am almost positive this is an accomplishment that most don't reach by 20yrs old which was my age when I purchased both. Trust me, I have not reached my goals and I am dying to bring those #s up and up. But for a 21yr old college dropout, I am damn proud of myself. Nobody, including you, will make me feel down about the things I have already achieved at my age.

I'm officially calling bullshit on this thread. If this is the same faux-modesty you are feeding to your friends, I can see why they don't want to be around you. You want to hide your money from others, but are already taking every available opportunity to brag about the things you've bought and how much they cost and your expensive clothes and blah blah blah.

Not impressed, sorry. Rich in things, poor in life. You're on an internet forum asking how to make your friends hate you less, for christs sake. And your immaturity shines through your Armani Exchange shirt.

I too am more successful than most people my age, but you can be successful and not have to hide your success. Anyone worth being friends with wants to be around successful people. It's pride, elitism and being an insufferable braggart that drives people away from you. Stop using your stupid townhouse and car to define yourself. Become someone interesting, because your friends are obviously tired of hearing about your stupid $10k dirtbike.

Edit: And let me throw a "motherfucker" in there too. For posterity.

I'm not trying to impress anyone, I just like having nice things. Don't think there's anything wrong with that.

And while everyone is talking about cars, I have a newer model BMW 3 series coupe and I love it. I've always liked having a sport-lux car to cruise in, and sport bikes to speed around.

Doesn't that just say it all?

Maybe you're honestly not trying to subtly "brag," but it's sure as hell what you come off as doing. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments, but the way that you write makes it sound condescending.

However, I will say this - I can relate to the core of your opening post. I'm in my (very) early 20s and have had similar experiences, even with my very, very mediocre successes.

Everyone I know assumes that this is an easy job because I get to work from home on my own schedule, but I'm sure anyone on this forum knows that isn't the case.

I think this is the main problem, socially. At our age and especially this generation, it's not uncommon that your friends/peers would have your average post-high school style "joe jobs." All of mine do, anyways.

When I first started doing well enough to call what I earn a livable income, I was pretty stoked. I would chat with my friends about it and how utterly badass it was to finally be doing what I've wanted to do for a long time, not having to have a boss, and making more than when I was rotting away in an office job.

This eventually developed into most of the people I'm close with thinking that I had plenty of money to play around with and all kinds of free time. It became frustrating to them when I would say, "No, I can't do *insert random favor*, I'm working" because to 99% of people, it's impossible to be working when you're at home, let alone be earning more than them. Then I would become frustrated because due to their lack of understanding, I felt like they had zero respect for me or the fact that I, essentially, run my own business.

The solution to this is to never speak to anyone outside the industry (if even within it) about what you do or how much you make. It's unfortunate, but you'll discover that you'll find yourself in less shitty situations. If anyone asks me what I do, I just say web design. If they want to know how much I make, I just toss something out there like, "well, it's ok, but business could be better." (Which is always true, whether you make a buck a day or thousands).

If you get pressed for things like "zomg where did that new car come from?" you just say that you've saved for a long time and worked really hard to get it. Which is true (aside from perhaps the 'long time' portion for some WF members).

So this has been one of my rambling only-somewhat-coherent posts. Here's a brief summary: Keep your mouth shut and stop being an asshole.

How much are those cars? I really want a BMW, I hear they are very reliable and the warranty is unbeatable. I'm tired of driving a Kia (although I love my Magentis!)

I don't want a flashy car, I just want a RELIABLE car. You get what you pay for right.

I paid an extra like $2500 on an $9000 car (back when I wasn't into affiliate marketing, so that was like signing my life away) for the extended warranty in 2005. Guess what - didn't use it for 3 years, just last week I needed to use it for a $300 part - and oh would you know that the warranty JUST expired a week earlier! Complete bullshit.

I want a car that takes care of you.

Dude - same problem here. My wife always says to me "Whats so good about being your own boss when you have to always work?" and nags at me that I always have to do random things at different times of the day.

People who aren't in the game don't realize you always have this shit on your mind. There's no set hours in this game, and something disastrous can pop up at any time of the day (or night) that will require your immediate attention.

If I was a doctor and my beeper went off, people would understand, because they know what that means. But if I'm going somewhere that I know I'll be away from home for like a few hours or more, I usually bring my laptop with me and leave it in the car just in case...but people don't understand.

Re: your advice.

That is literally the best advice I've heard on here. Whenever someone asks me what I do, I usually go through a million things in my head and end up saying something stupid like "I pay people to make me Facebook Applications" or "I'm an internet marketer".

People don't know what the hell that means, and then they usually start drilling me with questions. God forbid they ask me how much I make, either myself or my wife will blab something stupid to them.

I can't lie, never could, I grew up mormon with strong morals (still don't swear, sorry guys) I get nervous and fidgety and turn red lol.

SCRATCH THAT!

From now on I'm going to say "I do web design."

If someone asks me how much I make, I'll say "I make enough, but it could be better"

and if someone asks me how I afford this or that I'll say that I saved up for it for a while.

+rep!

Ok here's the deal. How do you not look like a douche bag with a small cock that uses his money as a crutch because he can't pull ass in B grade jeans driving a pickup truck.

Work on the inside first. My guess is being young and making a lot of money you're gaining your self confidence from how much money you make. Stop and imagine yourself using foodstamps and and having a hard time living one day to the next.

Who are you?
Do you still love yourself and your life?

It's sad to see people that gain their self confidence from the car they drive or watch they wear. They always need a more expensive house, watch, car to keep raising their self confidence.

Bottom-line if you even have to ask the question that you used to start this thread you need to do some serious soul searching and start asking you questions like "who am I?" Not because of the spending because the if you don't know the answer to how to be humble you need to go internal and work some things out.

This topic is interesting because figuring out how to deal with the social repercussions of financial success at a young age (or any age, honestly) can become a quagmire. People have a hard time giving up friends. So when those friends catch wind that you're doing better than they are and start treating you badly for it, how do you handle it? The honest answer is that people who make serve no purpose but to make you feel like shit for who you have become are not your friends. Like someone said earlier, make friends who are not intimidated by success. They're usually successful themselves.

Friends are easier to deal with. Family can be a bitch. I'm talking extended family here. While I was growing up, the only member of my family that was financially healthy was my uncle. Not surprisingly, he is in the computer industry. Only white collar in the family tree at the time. He was constantly made to feel that he both sucked for being "rich" and was at the same time somehow obligated to dole out cash like an ATM.

So you better believe that I make damn sure that no one knows I make any money at all. I don't talk about what I do for a living. Until I moved away, my family assumed that I was home all day because I was jobless. Now that I live a few states away, I still don't talk about anything job or money related with them, and they make their own assumptions. When I visit, I am as low key as possible. The jackals would tear my wallet to shreds if they had a clue.

And bingo was his name-o.

ummm, yeah you do suck at NOT bragging LOL but my two cents....stop worrying about what anyone else thinks, be YOURSELF whatever that is, and everything that is supposed to happen and fall in place WILL. You might hit a few bumps along the way, you're supposed to - that's part of life and living and learning, but the key is to learn from them and keep moving.

And share 6 figure tips with fellow board members (cough) to show your humbleness!!!

Dude I am in that same boat. I feel like she's holding me back. She actually has issues with me making money. She always feels down because she only makes like $11 an hour (office records manager). I tell her she doesn't have to work if she doesn't want, and she won't accept. She won't even accept any money, she even pays half the bills.. It takes like her whole paycheck. I almost feel like its holding me back. She seams happy living that way, paycheck to paycheck.

shit is driving me nuts

Take some of the money and invest in something that she wants to do. She may like to paint or maybe she has a side business she want to start. That what Im doing

Take my advice. This is coming from a guy who made a whole bunch of money really fast because I was in the right place at the right time and I had my shit together. Only a small part of it from internet ventures, but because of it, I'm now in a position to focus a substantial amount of my time online . STFU about how much money you make. I know it can be hard because you are so excited about your success. I bought rounds left and right, picked up the tabs at dinners, scored all the toys a guy could want (no yacht), loaned money to anybody who needed it, moved my family to a better neighborhood and more... Most of your friends and family are not really happy that you are doing well. My parents are and my siblings are.. The rest secretly wish you fall flat on your face. It sucks, but hey, the world sucks. Let one of them find out that you made half a mill sitting around in your underwear and they'll resent the shit outta you. Your buddy made $2,400 last month and you made $2,400 before lunch. I promise you, he (they) ain't too pleased about that. You know what really pisses em off? You made that money off of the Interwebs and they can barely check their email. They also don't think you work hard and are more pissed at you for not letting them in what your doing. My cousin is a mortgage banker. Since he's in my family, I went to him to finance a portion of my new home. He saw my tax returns and his mouth dropped. His attitude has changed towards me. No shit. And I suspect he mentioned it to a few others... I've toned it down big time. The excitedness has passed and I go about doing what I do quietly. I now STFU and stealthily stack my chips..

That was the best un-paragraphed block of text I have ever read on this forum.
