Maybe you should consider a cultured diamond - a real diamond chemically, but made in a laboratory. They're priced lower than mined diamonds and conflict-free.

I spent $12,000 for a very high quality 1.5 ct solitaire. I visited a number of mom and pop shops, wholesalers and retailers before making my decision. I still feel confident that I got the best deal.

Fuck the C's, it's the size that matters. If you can afford a $1K 1Ct or a $2K 4Ct, get her the biggest one you can afford that's not yellow. In the end, she'll care about the size above all else.
That is so not true. A large stone may have inclusions like black spots, cloudiness, cracks. My grandmother had a big, cloudy stone in a dingy color that wasn't worth much.
Don't let them sell you anything lower in quality than I1, which is the highest grade with inclusions (I). It will look fine to the eye, but using a loupe, a jeweler can tell the stone is low grade.
The "S" grade is a far better choice (Some inclusions), and color is important. The whiter the stone, the higher the price, although I personally like champagne diamonds and grayer stones more than white-white.
You could even buy a beautiful setting, and get a stone from eBay, then have it set. Don't be afraid to learn about this, and be aware that jewelers prey on your ignorance.

Argos but check their return policy as some items are not covered by it which is a bit of a cop out.
Just watch a few hens mush over their rings sometime. The one with the 1/4 crystal clear perfect cut diamond isn't the one the others gush over, it's the gal with the 1 carat (or larger) ring they gawk at.
60 seconds after they get the ring they don't give a shit about the C's, they only care about the fact that they 'have' a ring and can show it off. None of the other girls care if it's a S1 or S2 or what shade it is.
I've always heard 3 to 4 months of your annual salary should be considered for this important purchase.
