The world is full of them!

Why is it that any amatuer with photoshop lessons under his/her belt thinks that gives them the right to call themselves a "graphic designer".

I had to guys doing design work for me, I ended up getting refunds from both, and I didn't even ask for it!

They simply thought I was too demanding and "rude" apparantly.

here the deal, you look though their portifolio and you think "wow" this guy's pretty good.

You assume they did everything themselves, so you pay them cash up front to design stuff for you...

..next they email you back, which basic jazzed up text and a FUCKING STOCK CLIPART!! as your main website icon.

Then you email they back telling them so... and they claim that you're rude and refund your money, refusing to do the work for you..

Then you go back to their portifolio and realise all the artwork on their logos are done with stock cliparts, but it just so happens that the logo was designed around the clipart so it sort of fits well, but you try asking them to do a "custom" drawing, and they're useless...


ANyway, got anyone you can recommend, I need one badly!

Also... they have no clue how to design logos based on the theme of the websites...
 
Checkout sitepoint for better prospects with creditable profilios as DP usually consist of inconsistent freelancers. Your demands also depend on your budget so do not expect to have a whole site or brandable logo done for $25-50.
 
you're probably looking in the wrong places or aren't willing to pay enough for quality work.

the vast majority of sites don't have the budget for a proper logo like the big boys have. i can't even afford to invest the time into designing them for my own projects.
 
Yes I agree, there are tons of people out there who call themselves as designers but in actual they are not.. but is does not mean that all the figures are equal.. there are also very good designers available for such work.. I'll suggest you to google for this .
 
saying goes, "You get what you pay for." I am always a little weary of people who are dirt cheap for design and code. I've paid good designers $300 for JUST design for an LP i could have gotten on here for $60. But it was well worth it...

that being said, let the conversions be the judge.
 
Its the same as every other industry - you get what you pay for. You wouldn't pay some kid from the block 30 bucks to re-wire your living room.
 
It depends on where you want to go and what you want to pay. If you take a look at my prices, for example, they start low but it strongly depends on your expectations. I do offer a quick logo for $55, which is quality work already because I'm in identity design for 8 years now and I'm quick and know what works. If you want me to look at your market, your existing designs, and consult you with your identity, offer revisions and variations and all that, then that won't go for $55. It's all about the time you want me to invest. Oh, and I don't use clipart :D

I agree it's hard to find a good designer who knows his stuff. I'd always look for a sense of individuality, diversity and uniqueness. Say you see a portfolio with 12 logos that all have a 3D swoosh in them, only in different colors and with 12 different "brand names" written there. I saw one of those the other day (the guy called them "logos" and sold them for $12).

Like I said, it all depends on what you expect :)

few of the designers i know actually draw, its sort of crossing over into another field. back in the day we had illustrators and photographers... and layout designers put it all together. wasnt all that long ago. Bob, your stuff is really good and your fees are way too reasonable. (stop that, youre making the rest of us look bad) Tiger, you might wanna jump on his offer quick!

sitepoint has a bunch of great templates, most of which have never been used and sold only once. i started selling my stuff there a few months ago, and saw some pretty nice returns... right now the marketplace has slowed down ALOT, which is a good thing for you. you wont have much competition from other buyers.
 
Being a designer is totally different from being an illustrator.
I know a few cartoonists, and most of them can't design for crap! Their websites look awful!!!

That said, if you can't design yourself, just pay for a decent template from somewhere like http://www.templatemonster.com , and get some images that suit your site better, and crop them yourself.
That's not too hard.
 
I will reiterate what others here have already said; you get what you pay for... usually. Yes, you can sometimes find a great designer willing to turn out identities for you for dirt cheap, but if they are really that good then they soon learn they can be charging a whole lot more for what they do.

I personally won't lift a finger for less than €500 for a logo design. However, that means you are going to get as much of my time as needed to get it right.
