Sitting here in an Omaha hospital room, wife is feeding our new baby (9 pounds, 21 inches) and occasionally giving me the evil eye for being on the laptop.

Right after we delivered, we had to wait for a while to get an empty room to stay in for a few days. This is because the maternity section of this hospital is full, full, full.

Evidently lots of babies are born in December - more than any other month - and more babies are born right before Christmas than any other time of December.

Valentine's Day works.

Still, as I watched my wife going through the last few months of her third pregnancy, I observed some familiar patterns that some of our younger, less female-familiar WF members may not have encountered before. Because these are unfamiliar waters, I figured I'd waste a few minutes to throw out some ideas for someone who wants to capitalize a local baby boom.

Nestbuilding - my wife went out and bought several thousand dollars worth of items to fluff her nest - our home. Hitting up pregnant (and irrational) women whose husbands are at work and unable to say no to online purchases might be pretty lucrative. New appliances worked for us, as did unique, portrait-quality baby clothes (not regular baby clothes - they can be found at any consignment sale), baby monitors, wall fixtures, bedding and a few other things I've bought domain names for.

I'd say some good research could be done by hitting up a new mommy forum, posting a poll and asking what they spent time looking for and how hard was it to find. Or doing the yahoo answers thing and asking the same thing.

Babies sell all sorts of crap. Want to sell a car? Put a baby on it in a commercial. Sell a house? Have a baby on the floor. A guy with a baby is inherently more trustworthy to women, so borrow a baby or two if you're going to take pictures of products, or stage some other kind of picture.

Anything that can help soothe a baby, anything at all, will sell. Oh god, people are desperate at that point. Creativity can go a long way here. I can't wait to get to my home computer so I can put some things together and test em.

Congratulations! Babies are wonderful. Yes... find a way to earn money in the baby market to help pay for those diapers you'll be going through again. I've got a great grand baby on the way. The baby showers will begin in a few months..... ;)

Congratulations! I love big babies!

As a mommy of two little ones, I can safely say your list of ideas is pretty sound. Cleaning products are good, too as nesting can involve some serious cleaning and carpets especially seem to get cleaned or replaced right before baby.

If you're going to talk to women, be VERY aware that they react differently than men. They are emotional readers and if you turn them off, you can't get them back. Not only have you lost a potential client, but all of her friends as well. (Pregnant women travel in packs online.)

The mindset of pregnancy and the new mother (who is even more irrational) is that the world revolves around her baby. Everything is tied to motherhood and protecting the child. Suddenly school districts matter and moms worry about the most seemingly random things and how they will affect baby. (OMG! Junior will never have a chance to drive a Camero now!)

Pregnant women nest and buy too many things they plan on using. New mothers buy books, related products, advice and "real life" products. Example: While pregnant, a woman will buy the most adorable Converse High Tops in Size 2. (These will fit most 6 month olds). After delivery, she buys cute socks since shoes are ridiculous at this stage of development. And when the baby turns about 9 months old, she'll start seeking out Robeeze style soft leather shoes to promote optimum foot development while baby is learning to walk. (She learned about it on an authority site and verified it on a message board with other new mommies.)

Mothers are a HUGE market online and often overlooked completely. If you can get in with MOTHERS, not just regular women - not everyone can, you have a very lucrative opportunity.

I'll give every man out there a hint. The majority of mothers you'll find online are highly educated, most often hold advanced degrees, have a career or have had one - not just a job, and aren't primarily interested in beauty products, weight loss and accessories. Mothers are worlds away from non-mothers. In my experience, however, dads seem to be the same both before and after baby online. LOL

Hey man,

Congrats on the new kid.

Kids are great...

My 2 girls are the most beautiful things in the world to me..

I'm sure most parents feel the same about their little ones..

I got three. God bless you and congrats.

I agree with omgyams. Not an AM outlet, but you're right - new parents will buy FUCKING ANYTHING on that aisle at babies r us. I bought all that worthless shit for baby #1, and by #3, I fully expected him to pull the car up to the front of the hospital when it was time to go. ;)

What you just did is a baby-drunk-dial.

I've been there... Twice.

You're so tired, yet full of adrenaline from the birth, that you want to conquer the world.

Not complaining, just reminiscing about my own boys' birth days.

Congrats. I don't envy you or your new sleep schedule though. Every 2 hours for 2 months, every 4 for another 3... Glad it's you and not me bud!

Congrats, hope mom and baby are doing well.

Yeah this is the third, but the first I've stayed over with at the hospital with his mom.

The fold-out chair/bed is just about the worst place I've ever slept. It is horrible. There are metal bars everywhere. My head almost went between the metal frame and the back of the chair several times. I want to grab the nurse and throw her in the chair and tell her to sleep there for a minute.

Their internet access sucks too. Wireless throughout the hospital, but it has websense on it. WTF? Can't click through to eBay?

Still. I'd stand by my statement that parents buy anything they can to help the baby sleep.

Side Note: Putting your kids on Ebay even as a joke brings in social services :)

Congrats though. I have 4 kids. It goes sort of like this.

First kid: Proud Daddy and Mamma - Sleep not required. Wife will probably be an insane maniac. Sanitation is paramount. Pictures will flow - get stock in Kodak.

Second Kid: Sleep still not required. Sanitation is still important - but wait - did she just pick the pacifier off the floor and just pop it in?

Third Kid: Let it cry - everyone is tired and it's a fact that crying never killed a baby. It's crying let it play with the car keys that are disgusting. Go ahead and chew on the shopping cart.

Fourth Kid: Can we sell one on Ebay? Seriously, how the heck am I supposed to drive ANYTHING except a caravan? Is he eating dirt? It's o.k. it won't kill him. Crap, he is 3 years old, and we've only taken 2 pictures.

I've got two. A boy and a girl. One of each, so I'm done. Thankfully, the wife thinks stopping there was her idea... so I think I'm safe. But really, I love my children. I just don't think I'd like to see myself with more than two.

When we found out my wife was pregnant with our first, this is what someone told me...

"One is great, because it's two on one. With two, you're still alright, because it's two on two. After three or more, it's all over. They've got you outnumbered."

Bingo. You're completely right about babies sell anything. Case in point:

I would love to know how much this commercial made for them.

Hell, with three kids it's still a bitch of a time picking up a decent vehicle that'll work for everyone. Wife tired of minivans, but I'm in love with the 2009 Town and Country. That isn't a minivan, that's a damn mobile office!

She has a Durango I have a CRV. Might be problems moving everyone around with a carseat. 4 and a 2 year old.
