Windows 7 Beta: Likey/No Likey?

OK, after sifting through I hear good news about running 64 bit installs. Any installation snags? Did some of you manage to install via the ISO or go bootable media? Did you have to do BIOS updates? How are fat apps like Visual Studio or Zend Studio or the like running?
 


Serious question: How does it stack up with DOS emulation? I couldn't get DosBox to work right with Vista, and that really shat me, because frankly, I can't go a week without running over some Atreidies scum with my Devestators and blasting 8 reincarnations out of some Pkunk... among other things.

Which is also why I don't use a Mac.
That said, they don't have The Registry, which IMO is Windows' single biggest flaw.

Windows 7 is Windows Vista. Look at the kernel processes, the thread counts barely changed, there's almost no underlying difference, just UI tweaks.

The "Vista wouldn't run on my hardware but Windows 7 has all the drivers" is hilarious, since there is no driver difference between Vista and 7. Windows 7 drivers are Vista drivers. That was one of the goals of the OS, to not change the driver subsystem so manufacturers don't have to write another round of drivers.

Actually, Microsoft has flat out said this with the release. They already made huge improvements to the hardware handling in Vista, Windows7 is primarily built to improve the user experience while building upon the underlying architecture of Vista. (the good parts)

You have to admit, when Vista was released you had A) hardware compatibility issues or B) annoyances in the user experience. Windows7 kills both of those birds, with the 2nd stone. ;)

Check my post history and I have been actively researching buying a new laptop. How did I hear this? The Apple Store (India) - Macbook v/s Dell Laptops/ Notebooks - Home & Home Office

A Dell studio with 4 GB Ram, 400 GB HDD and a 9 Cell Battery costs Rs. 55,000 whereas Mac with 2 GB Ram and 250 GB HDD costs 1,10,000.

Sorry but I am not going to pay 3x more just for eye candy -- I would rather spend that money on advertising my shit.
 
So far, so good. Running the 64-bit version on one computer here, and while the preview windows at the bottom are kind of irritating, the media center features are pretty cool. The fish wallpaper is probably the highlight of my beta version experience.

I don't know that I'll rush to upgrade from XP, though. It's currently running on every other computer in the house, and it does what I need it to do with very few problems.

I don't really understand this argument, because you can install OS X on the Dell laptop.

The issue is not about OS X dude, it is about value for money. I don't think that OS X justifies that cost especially since Ubuntu is pretty awesome and has all the features that would make me want to get OS X -- except maybe the eye candy.

If that truly is the case in India, then I don't blame you. Horrible difference. In my country (not US) they are pretty much same price all over. Btw, you should never ever let Apple install any upgrades you can do it yourself. That's EXPENSIVE :)

And it's all about the value anyway, if you don't see value in it, then you should choose the one that provides value.

Because it doesn't have DOSBox? Maybe you should double check DOSBox's website ;) When it comes to emulation, I think there's no difference between Windows, Linux and OSX nowadays since all of them are based on x86 stuff.

Hours? The bsod or a single glance at the dump files would have told you that. Maybe you shouldn't have been building computers? Kind of makes since that you went over to a Mac now...

You are absolutely right. I'm not "nerd enough" to learn all stuff related to fixing computers etc. I worked few years in computer store as a salesman and that was enough for me :) Strangely I started to use OSX when I was working there and it was Windows PCs only store. It was XP time and Vista was just something that was suppose to be released "soon" and it was suppose to fix everything that was wrong with XP, which is in my opinion still the only Windows I would install.

Well with a little work you and compiz you can pimp the hell out of Ubuntu just as well as any os, from the dock bar to the special effects.

Seems that the next version of OSX - Snow Leopard - is going to be intel only, so good change you'll be able to boot that shit on any pc.
 
can't wait to install win7.

just a head's up, if you install the beta copy and when win7 gets released, you'll have to do a clean install.

Yeah but does one really need it? I mean isn't it better to spend that time researching domains, developing them, promoting them and making money that you can spend on travel and having real fun?
 
I am actually thinking about Win7, Vista Ultimate 64 is a car wreck for me.
(Completely new machine, built from scratch, Vista is just...ugh...)

I was just pointing out that it's just as possible to do. I thought you where making a comment on how the only reason you'd get OSX is for the visual effects. My bad.
 
Installed win7 on my laptop and now i can't connect it to my LCD TV. Was able to do it before with Vista. I don't know where the problem is. I connect it with VGA. Anybody got the same problem?
 
All you fucken idiots saying microsoft never comes out with any new features... its because Apple release a new version of OSX nearly every year, Vista was released 5 years after XP, and win7 is going to be released roughly 3 years after Vista. For all you know, Apple copied features from Windows while it was still in development, and released it in OSX sooner. Then when MS finally get it out.. they're bagged out for 'copying' OSX.

Secondly, Microsoft dont have a lot of space to make big changes, because most of their paying clients are corporations if they go and make big changes to the OS the business world is going to be much more hesitant in upgrading because then they have to retrain employees etc etc. Apple only have the residential dumbass market, and a few graphic designers in the business world, so they can do whatever the hell they like and not worry about what effect its going to have on the millions of businesses relying on the OS.

Oh yeah and you still cant maximise a window in OSX, or cut a paste a file.

This must be the best explanation EVER why Microsoft is accused of ripping of OS X :D Thank you sir, I was feeling very pissed off because one of my project but your "explanation" made me laugh out loud.

Umm, if drag & drop file really is that hard so that you need specific cut & paste options, maybe computers are not for you. And maximize window.. well, might be issue for some people who have problems with their hands who can't use mouse to resize window. There is a button in OSX that resizes the window to "optimal" size but personally I never use it.
