I did LasikMD in Montreal. The process for me required 3 visits over 3 days so my girlfriend and I decided to make a mini vacation of it. We drove up on a Thursday morning and got there around noon. Checked into a hotel about a block away from the clinic, which is in a professional building by the Bell Centre.
I went to the clinic that afternoon while GF did her thing. It's kind of a cattle call - there was probably about 50-60 people there. That afternoon they ran me through a barrage of eye exams and measurements - far more comprehensive then what you experience with your local optometrist. It seems as through I met with no fewer than 5 separate technicians, each conducting a specific portion of the exam.
The very next morning I went back to the clinic and was once again put through all of the exams that were performed the previous afternoon for verification prior to surgery. Following the second series of exams, the fee is determined based on the results and you go to a room to do the payment deal. Mine was $750 US per eye. They then hand you a smock and a Valium and you wait in a hallway outside the surgery room. You go in, lie down, keep your eyes open - buzz...buzzz and you're done. They give you some numbing drops for your eyes, a pat on the ass and you're out the door.
As simple as it sounds, for some reason it does take a lot out of you. Following the surgery all I really wanted to do was take a nap. I slept probably about 3 hours and when I got up I noticed a slight pain in my eyes that was immediately cured by the drops. Not excruciating by any means. Eyes were a little sensitive to bright lights but I wore sunglasses just to curb that issue as much as possible. They did advise against alcohol consumption (see sig). We went out to dinner and a few clubs that night and I found myself reaching for the drops every hour or so for the remainder of the evening.
Got up the next morning looked out the window and could legibly read just about every sign in site! Without question the most life changing thing I have done for a mere $1500. Back to the clinic that morning for a quick check up and routine eye exam - 20/20 both eyes. They did say however that as I get older I may still require reading glasses regardless of the surgery results. Back home that afternoon.
Montreal is a great city and we had an excellent time. Everything was pretty much walking distance from the hotel (Novotel Montreal Centre). We didn't go cheap with our dining and clubbing so I guess I spent at least another $1000 on that and the hotel. Pretty much $2500 for perfect vision and a good time with the GF in Montreal FTW. Did notice a little haloing effect on lights at night and was a little more sensitive than usual to oncoming headlights when driving at night for the first week or so. Been almost 3 years and no issues to speak of. Without question I say do it - extremely liberating.
