Does this happen to you? You're working away on something and think of another point but say to yourself that you will deal with it later, or you are maybe smoking a joint and come up with a brilliant idea but can't be arsed to move, or are possibly nodding off to sleep and think of something especially cool and put off writing it down or whatever, and then completely forget what is was?

How many brilliant ideas just slipped your mind never to be remembered? Well into double digits here... just forgot one, that's why I'm posting.

It happens to me all the time when nodding off to sleep. I'll have some brilliant ideas, but never remember them in the morning.

I recently started sleeping with my laptop open on a blank document right next to me, sometimes I'll roll over and jot some ideas down but not often.

The laptop next to the bed isn't a bad idea actually. I kept a dream diary when shit got really weird in my late teens/early twenties. I just need to be more conscious of my subconscious and be proactive about writing things down. I get so focused on the task at hand that I don't physically acknowledge the other things that are going on in my head and then lose those ideas.

I have directory for this. Every time I have a cool idea I create a simple text file with a name that tries to describe the idea and then in the file I type a description of the idea.

Write stuff down. On paper. This will help them "stick" better because writing is more visual, and thus, more powerful than just punching characters. And .txt files on your desktop get deleted all the time.

^^I do basically the same thing. I have shitloads of ideas in there. Some have the potential to be great and some have the potential to turn into nothing more than total shit. I say "potential" because I've learned the hard way more than once that many times what I think I know will be a grand-slam evolves into nothing more than a dog turd. Likewise, some things I throw up in an hour or less thinking "this will never amount to anything" will end up being gold.

Keep those ideas, though. Sometimes even the wackiest of ideas need to be kept around in a .txt file because as you learn and grow your business, you may one day come back across that idea and realize that somewhere along the way you just happened to pick up the missing puzzle piece that will make that bitch fly. Furthermore, I've sometimes been able to combine two or three ideas that, at first glance, appear to exist galaxies apart and would never "shake hands" with one another only find myself out running, in the shower, or on the shitter one day when the crucial "hinge" point comes to fruition in my head.

Sorry about the excruciatingly abstract concepts, but odds are anyone with any success in marketing has had to dig very, very deep in their "creativity tool bag" more than they'd like to admit to themselves. Falling back on those "Ah HA!" moments you jotted down a few months or even a few years ago can really save your ass in a pinch.

*Edit: I just saw that this was my 2,000th post on WickedFire. So not only did I shit the bed on not supplying boobs, I also can't shake the feeling that if I'd had realized this was #2,000 I'd have something more useful to contribute. If I weren't on the way out the door right now, I may have actually tried but since I am you guys will just have to settle for this. Apologies all around, boys and girls.*

I keep a pen and pack of sticky notes on me at all times. And then I only work when the inspiration hits and I actually feel like doing it. I've lost my fair share of insight on things because I wasn't efficient and didn't write it down or whatever. As good as I try to be about keeping things on tabs, I still mess up all the time though,

I've lost many idea's over the years because of the reasons mentioned. My latest idea pad is 'finger memo' for iphone/touch - its good because I don't have to turn on a light and wake the GF and it's a small device to keep on the bed frame or side table.

On a side note:
“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is way great spiritual giants are produced.” -SV

What usually works best for me when I forget shit is to take a .... uh... what were we talking about?

i just use evernote on my htc smartphone. Every time some good idea pops up, I open the evernote ink note tool and write it down. I think there's an iphone version too.

The best thing is that you can simply synchronize it with their server and then download it at home on your mac or pc with their own software. Its like a textbook, just on your pda / iphone / smartphone

Normally I don't forget... I just pass out at the keyboard, and fail to work the hours planned on the project then immediately rushing back on it when I do wake. lol.

But I got an ipod touch with me all the time just in case.

I'll never forget my sophomore year in highschool was Geometry. OOOh how I sucked at math. Geometry in particular (was actually pretty decent with Algebra though) I had this one problem that I had been trying to figure out for hours. You know one of those problems that had a geometric figure and had a-g in solutions? (Most of you are probably a bunch of Math geeks so you probably have no idea what was the deal but just be sweet and nod your head uh huh) It was so frustrating because we had been over it in class but I just couldn't get it. I was exhausted and finallly decided I needed a nap. I remember thinking about how I had heard that the subconcious absorbs EVERYThing and I also that when you sleep your subcouncous comes forward and how sweet it would be if I could bring forward this equation. I was probably assleep 5-10 minutes and BAM I knew it. I swear to god I saw it all in my head and I knew it. a b c d e f g- BAM. That was the coolest thing ever. That's also when I knew that I wanted to be a psych major. :D
