A while ago I speculated that one day a genius is going to get so pissed off at google that he makes a virus that puts his sites to the top of the serps, client side. And because there's no reason for anyone to notice, it could spread rapidly.

Then I thought, someone could be doing that now, and I wouldn't know.

Am I being stupid?

And because there's no reason for anyone to notice, it could spread rapidly.

"Because there's no reason for anyone to notice" applies to lots of viruses that don't spread rapidly. Such a hijack is certainly possible, but to hijack, first you need to attack/exploit/gain-access, which is the hard part.

It's like saying, "Someone could run around the parking lot stealing energy from car batteries." Yeah, that would definitely be mischievous and hard to notice, but if you're breaking into all those cars, you could probably monetize the opportunity better than that.

For every crazy genius out there, Google hires 12 ready to clean up the mess.

Nothing new. SERPs manipulation.
The hardest part is to spread this virus.

You need a fresh exploit code, botnet server and a virus.

I know some people who do this, but monetization is a big question. They tried adsense - banned after a 3rd month (banked $120k or so anyway). Now they resell traffic to small PPC networks.
A size of their network is about 650k infected computers.

Already been done a bunch of times. I could write something up to do this in a couple of hours, problem is getting paid out of something like this.

That would be nice

IF that happened .. it would be much easier, rather than slaving away on content, backlinks, affiliates......(general SEO shit) you just pay some money and vola and you are on top (untill someone pays more) ... and before you know it they will pull the same shit as yahoo with the directory listing fee...

xDDDD

I'm sure that for a "genius," car security alarms would be nothing.

no if you have an advanced car alarm then that means that you got something you are protecting...

Me for instance I use razor blades behind my stereo,, so if sum Genius wants to jack my stereo, you wont be hearing some annoying alarm you will be hearing some dumbass screaming with blood gushing out of his hand.... kindahh what the do over in the middle east.. you steal some shit and the cut your fucking hand of...

Systems like this fail when they get talked about. Content link networks fail when to many people take part. Sneaky link bait methods get destroyed when some arrogant prick runs his mouth on a blog.

The really good systems are good because they are origional and not abused beyond there ability.
