I don't think it's anything abnormal to hug. A lot of Japanese guys just have an extremely severe inferiority complex towards foreign guys. It usually manifests itself as kissing your ass, but when it involves girls that's when they can freak out and start challenging you. The club is like fucking cockblocker central. You don't need to know how to pick up girls, you need to know how to stop the fucking guys from butting in to rescue her.

Foreigners in Japan also have a bit of a reputation for being manwhores, so even though you're fresh off the plane you might have gotten stuck with that stigma. Its worst in Tokyo, I think (and amongst the nightclub crowd).

.... might not be a bad thing, depending on your goals .....

You're right, there is a certain crowd who are really easy for us to bang. But it works the opposite way for most girls -- we have to learn how to make them comfortable and trust us, because they often assume we want to fuck 'em and flee.

wheww i thought this thread was going to be talkin trash about hugs. I was ready to lay the hammer down! haha

Hugs are the best end of story. Think about it. People are all like hey guy I want to hold your hand and wiggle it around for awhile because i'm all professional, you probably won't remember me 10 minutes from now but at least I didn't risk you being slightly uncomfortable. I'm sorry but thats just fuckin gay. Every culture and time period in the world has always used hugs as a hello nice to meet you and a friendly good bye. Suddenly in this day and age we get all stuck up and instead of going for a hug we stick out our hand with as much distance as possible so we can to keep a good dividing space as to not invade our precious little bubble but still make physical contact with someone as to not seem rude. I'm sorry but thats just wrong and insulting. If you meet someone don't be a dick, just give them the damn hug they deserve!

I lived in Japan for a couple of years.

You did nothing wrong. (ESPECIALLY if the girl initiated the hug!!)

Her boyfriend was being a dickhead. (Japanese generally cannot handle alcohol well which may account for his poor behaviour).

Read a few stories from a popular newspaper column in Japan: Jinsei Annai

You'll see that they suffer from very similar relationship problems that we do in the USA but they are historically dealt with differently due to ancient customs. Some people live traditionally and more conservatively whereas others live similar to Americans.

I lived in Japan for a while (in Sasayama near Kansai). Western men are generally considered a bit of a prize amongst japanese women. So yes it's an inferiority complex (along with the rittle penis syndrome). Drunk Japanese are hilarious, there's no holding back. They have to be so self-restrained and reserved in normal daily life that once they get a sniff of alcohol in them all the inner-exhibitionist comes flooding out. They have this weird cultural distinction between your normal self and your drunk self. No matter how much of a dick you are when you're drunk it's all forgotten about when you're sober. No one will ever mention and no one will ever hold it against you...
