Well, AMEX just declined me and I can't figure out why and am looking for some tips. I called them up and they couldn't even give me the reason...

Here's the situation:

All my credit scores are 700 or higher
No late payments
A few NSF charges over the last 2 years but I never was late on a payment
Income I told them is 55k

The only things I can think of why they would decline me is:

I'm 21
The economy

What am I missing and what do to?

Thanks

Your best bet is to apply for the green card and work your way up. Provide them with anything they may need(work proof etc) and also print out a copy of your credit report, see if theres anything weird on there, if you have open accounts just circle them and write an explanation and fax it to amex, they will then manually review your account.

When I saw the topic I was hoping to see someones ebook on how to get a card... sorely disappointed.

I would say that the economy is the biggest factor here. I do not know a single person who has not had problems with amex over the last year. You can read up some here on others thoughts, including an ex employee.

Well I'm full time Affiliate, so work proof will be hard to get.

Have you actually tried to send them copys of credit reports to get a manual review and did it help?

AMEX IS SHIT. I've been (was) a customer of theirs for over 12 years. I've had the blue, green and platinum. Never paid late, had $35,000 credit line everything was dandy.

Then, when the credit market started to go to shit a year ago, they decided to lower my limit to $8000, while I had a balance of $10,000 (this was on the blue card).

Do you know how fucked up that makes your credit look when you're balance is higher than your limit. I called them, said what's this bullshit and they just said that they couldn't do anything about it. So I paid the thing off and closed it and will never have an AMEX again. I don't care if Mr. Amex called me and begged me to get another account...I'd just hang up on him. That's no way to treat good customers.

Sorry I don't have a good answer on how to get your approved.

Yeah I had the same experience as efeezy with my blue card this year.

Then they reviewed and lowered my platinum account too (both were always paid and in good standing).

Anyway, I think a lot of it has to do with the economy. When I got approved for my platinum card (I was 20 at the time) and my credit wasn't even that great - but I had a blue card with them for about a year and always paid the full balance on it off every month.

Is there a difference in "hardness" to get different kinds of cards? Seems like with the "unlimited" spending limit on the green, gold and plum, it shouldn't really matter right?

If you do get the AMEX, be prepared for a rough first 6 months. They will randomly audit you, shut you off, and general no give a damn about you. Then once you get past all that and start actually carrying some high balances be prepared for a massive financial review of your business.

I've got a Blue Cash and get a mailing at least twice a month telling me to upgrade to Gold. So I guess that's one way.

i don't see the point in paying $180 or whatever a year for a gold card. just get a bank of america 1% cash back card. and $450/year for a platinum? $2,500/year for black? fuck that. that's like 4-25 hookers.

Who will do the Audit and of what? The gov of my taxes or Amex of my account?

Amex will audit your business and want 2 years of tax returns and profit/loss statements. If they see you have high volume spending with razor thin profit margins (which is typical of a lot of affiliates), they will close your account and decline any further business from you.

it's probably honestly age because of a lack of credit history, which I don't like, because at 55k I don't see why that'd be refused, especially with a 700+ credit score.

Apply for the green card and once you throw some money on it and pay it off they will offer you a better card. AMEX is a bitch when it comes to approving, give them a call and offer to fax over last years tax returns showing you make sufficient money to have the card.

I think it has a lot to do with the economy, if I remember correctly AmEx was paying their account holders to close their accounts. I have a card with Chase right now and I swear they are trying their hardest to get me to close my account.

Its def your age and most likely household income. Even if you said $100k + they may ask for documentation because they view 21 with $100k+ salary as out of the ordinary. Guess they never heard of Adwords :)

It can't be directly related to age, as per the Consumer Credit Protection Act lenders can't take age into consideration when making lending decisions.

Even with a good credit score, if you don't have enough of a credit history (related to age, generally) they can decline based on that.
