Having solved all other problems, Congress debates College Football

It almost seems impossible that governemnt would get involved in this. I was reading it and kepy thinking I was on the Onion.

Is there anything the government will not get involved in?

If people dont like the college system cant they take their dollars/viewing elsewhere or petition the colleges / system themselves?

I was so curious that I had to google the author. It seems he's got a few books published, all sports related. This story seems .... legit???

On a side note: PapaJohn always launches the most interesting threads!

Yeah, this is legit. I read about it in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. The editorial letters it received indicate the rest of America finds this equally baffling/ tangential/ comical/ sad:

I'm thrilled that as Congress strangles American citizens with a huge national debt, costly health-care plans and stifles job growth with nonsensical cap-and-trade edicts, the members have carved out precious time to discuss a college football national championship ("Football Bowls Take Spotlight," U.S. News, Dec. 7).

Any chance we can keep these august lawmakers fully engaged on this important topic, thereby preventing them from completely destroying the American economy and crushing Americans with more tax-and-spend programs?

If Congress ever wonders why it has a 17% approval rating, examining the timing of this bill would be a great start.

Joe Barton, the sponsor of this government bill, has said the college football system needs to be fixed because "it's like communism."

First off, on what planet does the federal government have the right to interfere with the way the NCAA conducts its business? I guess to an extent colleges receive federal funding, but still...it's ridiculous. Morale of the story - never take a dime from the government unless you want them to control everything you do.

Second, like everyone else said, why are they spending their time (and our tax dollars) on this when there are pressing domestic issues and multiple wars going on. "We can walk and chew gum at the same time". Really? That's your answer??

What I'm really wondering is where this is coming. As usual, follow the money. Got to be a powerful group of lobbyists pushing for this for some kind of financial gain.

All that said, there does need to be a playoff system...but it's no business of the federal government to get involved.

I'm more of a "glass half full" kind of guy. If those idiots are busy legislating college sports maybe they won't have time to fuck up something of actual importance.

It is ridiculous. But, here's a thought...

The populace votes these knuckleheads into office. While the decisions of these politicians are inane, disdain should be reserved for those who voted for them.

Think of it this way (bear with me. I'll make the connection.)...

Suppose you had a friend whose spouse has repeatedly cheated on him or her. After the second or third time, you would begin to wonder why your friend continues to take the spouse back. After the twentieth episode, who is more deserving of your disdain?

A. The cheating spouse for whom everyone has the same expectation.

B. Your friend who takes the spouse back... over and over and over and over, hoping (emotionally) the person will change.

We have a long history of politicians doing silly things and as a result, creating havoc. Sometimes, it simply wastes limited resources. Other times, innocent people die.

At some point, our disdain should be pointed at those who place these charlatans in a position of authority.

Barton, from Texas, proposed it last year after :

Bobby Rush has gone after NCAA football before for not having enough Black coaches or something like that.

That is how democracy works. You vote for the person who will get you the most free stuff or force other people to do what you want them to do.
