Nicely done!

If you want to help a poor person, give them a job, not a handout.

ehhh this is one place where I can differ with the Ayn Rand philosophy. charity isn't necessarily altruism, but it also shouldn't be government funded. some of these areas, jobs are nonexistent, and they wouldn't be qualified for anything. they have to have some kind of way to get a footing to get a job in the first place.

now in the USA? give them a job. it's different here

My point is that if you want to help the people of Africa, invest in companies which are developing Africa ethically. If you want to help them, find a way to trade with them. But just sending them food and medicine hasn't worked for decades, it will never work, because it doesn't address the problem.

The problem is that they do not have markets, and they can't trade their way to a better life. Until that problem is addressed, they will stay in a perpetual state of poverty, constantly needing people to sacrifice their wealth here so that they can consume in misery. The world would be better if we could help them participate in the market so that they can give and receive without handouts.

But on a serious note,

It really is a horrible situation. If they don't have food, water, the essentials how are the expected to survive?

It doesn't cost much to help, but where is that getting them in the long run? It reminds me of homeless people here in New York City. The ones who are genuinely in need, that is. If you come by and give them something to eat today, what about tomorrow?

Now, you can argue that these people should just get a job. For the most part, I agree. If you need legitimate help being sustained while in a slump, that's one thing but it has to end somewhere.

In these third-world countries, when will it end? When they are developed nations? Is it our responsibility to develop them?

eh....the questions could go on forever but I think you get what I mean.

yup

if they are so dumb they can't survive, they shouldn't be alive anyway

whoa real fucked up comment.

that probably would apply to me, I was born in England. Loads of opportunities. But if you're born in a small village in the middle of Africa run by some anti-government turds, it's difficult.. I would assume.

You know how many jobs there are in the middle of fucking backwardsville? The only way to give them jobs would be for dem gubment to make up bullshit for them to do, but the states are all failed.

Here's some people participating in markets. They trade. They're still fucked.

Where you are born is so coincidental. We shouldn't act like these people have a choice in their poverty. We should count ourselves lucky.

Before I respond to this I want to ask if this was sarcasm. Considering the situation we're discussing in this thread, I find it hard to believe this ignorant statement is your actual opinion.
