I'm not going to get into my views on the death penalty, not the purpose of my post, but this is interesting and very creepy at the same time. Worth the time to watch it all, believe me. The death penalty is legal right now, so should it be as humane as possible? If so, what IS the most humane way? Take a look.

Edit: Don't watch in post, go to the URL, this is such a small embedded player

Humane? I don't know about US but in India it is given in rarest of rare cases, which include Child Rape and Terrorism Against State. In both the cases I don't want it to be Humane but as painful as possible...

I posted that on a thread last year, very interesting documentary. Generally I like Michael Portillo, he's thoughtful and non-reactionary unlike most Tories.

If I had to choose how I die, nitrogen asphyxiation sounds good :)

A bullet to the back of the head. Person won't feel a thing and it's very cost effective. Little messy but nothing a hose won't take care of.

Do you trust your government not to use "terrorists" as scapegoats, distractions, excuses to curb civil liberties? Or to claim political dissidents are terrorists? Reading the stories of some of the unfortunate fuckers back from Guantanemo I can see how states could easily get away with executing whoever in the name of fighting terror.

As for the child rapists, well they generally get what they deserve in prison.

I think the only executions should be voluntary, more assisted suicide - either you spend your life locked up or take this injection, your choice.

Not here. TO get death penalty in India, it has to be given by the lower court first, then held by session court, then held by high court, then held by supreme court and then held by the president of India. It can get stuck down at any point in the chain and converted into life imprisonment or something else.

So no, I don't trust my government to make that judgment call but I do trust all of the chain I mentioned above to hand it out in truly the rare cases which deserve such a thing. So it is not easy to get Death Penelty in India unlike Texas.

I'd prefer to let them get what they get in Jail and then be killed so that they don't get back to their old ways...

I had a discussion like this with my old boss. We both came up with the theory that stoning someone to death could be quite marketable and effective at the same time. It could be held at local sports arenas and tickets could be sold. The crowd can participate by purchasing stones to throw. It would raise money for the victims’ families with a partial cut going to the state. You can also buy different sized rocks as well and set up an OTB type of betting pool on the final stone.

This would be gratifying for the victims, help raise money, and also act as a deterrent toward crime. I mean a stoning could take a few hours. The criminal would have to wear some sort of helmet for the first 3 rounds to make it last. Stones are cheaper than bullets too.

Get back to afghanistan. You seriously think that's a good idea?

It comes down to the bigger issue of how we deal with criminals. Do we want to punish them or rehabilitate them? (Can trying to do both ever really work?)

Is execution the ultimate punishment or merely another way of keeping the population happy and under control. Given the attitude of the media at times it doesn't look like we've come much further from the days of public hangings.

Why not just have the running man? Satisfy the crowds bloodlust without them having to leave their armchair and make loads from the ad revenue too.

When I was a kid, my tonsils got infected and started poisoning my system making me sick.

I went into hospital and had my tonsils surgically removed after which I was forever cured of tonsilitis.

The same should go for criminals (now I'm talking about murderers, child molesters and stuff, not jaywalkers!) - it isn't a question of punishment or rehabilitation. It's a matter of permanently removing them from society and cheaply and as efficiently as possible to keep the rest of the population safe.

Take them straight out the back of the court house after being found guilty and put a single bullet through thier heads. Instant death, no waiting on deathrow, it's as humane as it gets and the cost to the tax payers is what? A buck?

Criminals and prisoners have rights? Fuck that! As far as I'm concerned the nigger that shot my mother rendered all his god given rights null and void, by his own volition, the second he decided that it was worth taking an innocent life for a few bucks!

I support the death penalty, but what if you kill someone that was later proven to be not guilty of that crime. That's the fucked up thing. Ill be the first person in line to kill a murderer or child rapist, but you have to 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt guilty of that crime. And there are some cases where they find out that they have killed the wrong person. That's why i would have to support the nitrogen gas method of capital punishment. Sure they will die with no pain what so ever, but what if its the wrong person. At least you know that they died peacefully and without pain.

I don't know, that may make me sound like a pussy

The thing about the death penalty, if we're talking cost to the system, is in the USA due to the appeals process and much more, it costs more to put a prisoner on death row, than it does to give them life in prison.

You have to be more careful than that, what about executing an innocent man? Personally I would rather spend the extra money and time to make sure the person being executed is in fact guilty. Our system has it's flaws but I much prefer it over something so reactionary as simply taking a man out back and executing him.

The death penalty has it's place, it just needs to be carefully applied.

Legalize weed, see how many petty drug related murders there are. Not saying this is the solution, but it WILL take a bite outta crime.

I agree, however , in my county , something like 85% of robberies/thefts are to pay for Heroin.

As for the death penalty vs rehabilitation - How do you know someone is REALLY rehabilitated? There's some pretty disturbing statistics out there of how many criminals who are released as being 'rehabilitated' then go back to the same crimes they went to jail for.

its funny how many of you think the justice system in america is a perfect system in which only the guilty are persecuted.

i have had so many of my friends wrongfully accused of crimes and done hard time for crimes they never committed. your whole "take them away from society" approach would only work in a utopian situation where the justice system actually works for the people and not to put cash in the pockets of the judges.

the cops aren't your friends. ACAB.
