US politicians don't embrace things for pragmatic reasons: They are slaves to politics and endless posturing. Decriminalizing drugs would invite opponents to paint them as "soft on crime" and "coddling criminals" at election time, so they simply vote for whatever sounds toughest.Why wouldn't any politicians be brave enough to get behind this? It's already happened in many countries around the world and they have seen the benefits.
You might see a couple of politicians in liberal states such as VT or WI sponsoring a bill like this, but most of the rest of them won't touch it.
