If it was just with France & Germany, fair enough, but tying our currency to a bunch of tinpot countries whose entire economic output is based on wine and olive oil?

In fairness, there are some good Spanish companies.... Banco Santander got things massively right during the credit crunch. Although HSBC did even better. They are like the Borg of banks. (plus I like them because they lost the paperwork on a large loan they gave to me.)

Unfortunately the Tories treid to make the UK a service industry country last time round. Meaning the countries who's economic output is based on wine and olives are in a slightly better position.

And the Tories took the UK close enough by driving slowly in the fast lane as Private Eye used to put it to give George Soros 2Billion Pounds in the course of one day.

yep. italy is by far the worst fucked country. Yet almost no newspaper really talks about it and instead choses to select portugal as the black sheep.

Portuguese ministers are pretty smart if you think about certain things:

The Pope is visitting Portugal right now -> since 90% of Portugueses are catholic, they don't care about anything else. Meanwhile, they are passing some very hard laws to save monies and there are no demonstrations/strikes whatsoever since it could interfer with the pope's visit and security
