What were you doing online in '95?

Shake it baby...
(and don't accidentally blow your shotgun instead of your wad)

Remember the nude patch?

hahaha. I really miss Duke 3d, I never got the nude patch for it. I just threw some money at some strippers to look at their 3d nipples.

Learning how to do that shit from htmlgoodies.com

Man I loved that site as well when I got internetz in 2000, yer man was a great writer.
Pathetic .... when I think that I could have bought mortgage.com for $25, or any other 1 word domain...

Pretty sure it was $80 per year, or for 2 years from them Network Solutions faggots.

Back in 1995, I was 10 and didn't even have a PC. I spent the summer at the beach playing soccer, swimming and trying and failing to kiss Dutch girls at the caravan camp.

I finally got a PC with shitty dialup by 2000. By mid 2001 I already sold one ringtones website for $2500 and was banking off another one I created. A born hustler!

Using the double-enter trick to play AOL premium games for free.
Scripting with Windows Recorder to play the above automatically (Federation, Gemstone III, DragonsGate)
Building a website about DragonsGate
Playing Bolo and Warcraft on the networks at our elementary school
Writing a Jurassic Park themed area for a MUD on a local BBS system

Learned more from those activities than any CS class I ever took.

- Googling cheats and codes for my favorite games

Anyone actually online in 95 knows google didnt exist yet.
You got your cheats off of usenet.
If you wanted to know who someone was, you fingered them.
FTP was how you got warez.
You needed dial ups and shell accounts to make sure you always had access.
Being an op in IRC actually meant something.
You used unix Talk to chat with people.
You wrote code in VI and emacs.
Call waiting ruined your day.
To check your email, you typed 'pine'.
LPmuds were MMORPGs.
And you balled up webcam girls using CU-SeeMe.

now I hear all you guys talking about Yahoo back then... but personally, I always thought Yahoo served shitty results. I was an AltaVista guy at that time... I thought the results were much more relevant.

Speaking of chatting with girls online... I recall NEVER being lucky with that... I must have met 20 girls in real life at that time and all of them had something wrong with them LOL... in the meantime I had this ugly buddy of mine who was scoring a hot girl every week on mIRC. I guess it's very similar to Internet Marketing in a way... some people just got it, some don't :D

i was keyword stuffing, click frauding, banner exchange hammering, building doorway pages and trying to figure out how to cash checks without a bank account.

great thread.

chilled in all the private rooms, building punters, scrollers and more. taggin profiles and shit. AOL was life back then. <--overheads and internal accts

Anyone remember the Surf n' get Paid days? how about writing an app in visual basic that would automatically browse webpages while you were idle so you can leave dedicated PC's for surfin and gettin paid, watchin your stats rack up - to bad they never paid out.

98-99 , got into IRC, started a shell / hosting company, got rooted/frauded/etc everything else you can think of.

ah man, the good old days, I still go back thinking what would have been different if I registered some of those premium domain names :P or at least built out a few .com's back then and just let em sit!

handle was Kani

I loved Altavista. and HotBot, Lycos, Excite...

what? nobody was a regular at PersianKitty.com?????

Lol, don't forget thehun.net and once we started getting some bandwidth it was p-bot.com. Had to wait an entire fucking day to get the next 3 mins of video on a 20 minute movie. FFFFUUUU

Does anybody remember mIRC porn servers where you typed in the likes of "!freeporn" and the bot would message you their listing of crappy porn?
