3 days of my new full time AM gig..thoughts

I agree about having an office to go to. But why not rent your own office and do your AM work there? That's what I plan on doing so it doesn't feel like I'm "home".

Don't know about everyone else, but I've kept the old day job of being a Real estate agent even though I do enough AM to kill that job several times over.

To me at least, there's appeal of going to a office every day , sitting down somewhere that's not my couch/lazychair with the laptop in hand and doing sites. Maybe I just like the office environment or such , but to me it feels more productive.

Congrats on killing the day job, I know when I went into real estate, after a while I quit my normal job which was scary due to the fact it was a regular paycheck and RE was not. RE to AM has been different, as I'm planning on taking most of my AM profits and putting it into real estate, so being involved in RE atleast to a point makes a whole lot of sense.

A lot of people here saying a schedule is essential. I say split test it. I fall apart when I'm working on a schedule: no matter what, eventually my sleep gets fucked up, I become uninterested in working and I start getting nothing done.

Working when I want works better for me. YMMV.

Things - task management on the Mac

Has been a lifesaver for me. I will get an idea in my head and not stop thinking about it, even when I have more pressing projects or am not working at all. If you can trust this system then your mind will feel a lot less cluttered. Just put it in the iPhone and go on with your day.

I worked at home for about 12 months before I couldn't take anymore and rented some office space. Feel it out for yourself, but if you find that a leaking faucet is keeping you from doing your "job" then it's time to move out.

curious... what % of that is from EPN?

I net about $1500 a month on the EPN. I run PPC to those sites and spend around $800 a month. If I could just stop getting my campaigns slapped by Google, they'd be a lot more profitable.

I'm amazed, and wondering how it's done because I get a lot of clicks but very few conversions.

A bit of female advice for the OP: now that you are a full time housebound husband, your wife will expect you to cook and clean up more than before. I hope you take this under advisement, in the interest of marital harmony.

Another piece of advice: Keep a tape measure at the ready for a weekly "gut check," and be on notice if you start gaining weight from the easy commute and low impact desk work. (Been there, done that.)

How does working at home make you gain weight? A commute means you sit in a car and ride into work, same thing. If anything, working at home should be easier since you can take breaks and hit an elliptical, nautilus, jog, etc. whereas in the office you don't have such flexibility...

The ones with the problems are those who can't sit still and probably wander around, poking their heads in the fridge, watching tv, having to force themselves to sit down at their desks, etc.

The structure of waking up early, getting dressed and taking a long commute in the car burns more energy than shuffling to work in a bathrobe then sinking into the couch. I am that person.

If you have exercise machines and the discipline to use them, good on ya!

I figured I'll give my jackass corporate assmunchers my 2 week notice in mid December as my XMAS gift to them. :)

Plus, I got my 2 week paid vacation in November that I already put in for. Basically, I figure I'll milk them a little more for all they're worth. :)

Getting an outside office is a big thing. I have not done so and pay for it regularly. If I had to do it all over again the home office would be the first thing to go. Having it as a second office is great but leaving to go work someplace else is a huge benefit as you can separate Dad/Husband/Friend from home.

LOL. Ok, listen. Far be it from me to hint at what this obviously is <cough PROCRASTINATION> but that's cool.

With the thousands of desks out there you can buy, to actually be building one is probably more for the purpose of stress relief on your part, and that's cool. Your revenues are up, screw it, build the desk.

Be careful though. Before I got an office 2-3 years ago, and I worked at home, I found every excuse in the book to finish early and work on little projects around the house. One month it was painting, the next it was bathroom redesign. These are all fun projects to do, but work ultimately suffers if you treat your day at home unlike a day in the office, where you're kind of trapped and need to work a solid 8 hours or so to accomplish what needs to be done.

lol, would be nice if I was able to do more around the house... I treat everywhere I go like my office.

If he's still building furniture after 2 weeks then theres a problem. For now, I think it's mostly therapeutic for the guy. He's at a major crossroads in his life, he's probably doing a lot of thinking while he builds that desk.

The desk is so much more than a desk man. He's probably looking at it and feeling fear. Will this desk be his best friend and make him the bank he needs to "support" his family? (pardon the pun)

Get yourself 2-3 monitors, get a setup that will improve your efficiency, do it right from the start. Planning your new office is fun. When the time comes and the wood stain has dried, and you sit in your chair for the first time and get started, you'll laugh at your days when you used to sell cars.

Yes, the desk is more than a desk. It's a symbol of the new life he is building.

So what if it takes him a few more days? Honestly, I get more done in 3 hours (interspersed throughout a day) than I did when I was working 9 hour days for the man, with 5 hours of my own work time.

Frame of mind is everything. You have to see it, and know it and then, it's all zen. You just do it. And it's effortless.

I could never quit my job and just dive in.

Heck. Quit with a few K in the bank, some running campaigns and take a week to settle the mind into its new home.

Building a sturdy desk supporting the new ventures is a fucking great way to go about it.

Please post pics when done (or also in-process).

The desk project (while in part procrastination probably) has given me time to get my mind cleared. I'll have it finished up by this weekend for sure and I'll be in full gear next week. It's simple, but it's the size and shape I want. I'll post a few pics when done.

Fortunately or unfortunately I had to spend about 5 hours yesterday moving everything to a dedicated server. HostGator shut down my shared hosting account in the morning because I was using "too many system resources" and told me it was time to move my ass to a dedicated. I knew it was but had just been putting it off. I hope that I don't take too big of a hit in the search engines for an extended period of time. We'll see.
