Sure, we needed a populace that can read, perform basic computing tasks, take a drink order, etc., because we need more slaves. Public school in America doesn't exactly emphasize critical thinking, research, independence, or any of the skills needed to be an entrepreneur. Public school's function is to create workers.

There are plenty of people who can read that don't use that skill to better themselves because they're thoroughly satiated by bread and circuses and they've been rewarded since childhood for being intellectually lazy.

I'm not sure the point about Finland really makes any sense. You're implying that the welfare state of Finland doesn't interfere with parents staying together. That has nothing to do with the system in the U.S., where single mothers are penalized for cohabiting with a man.

There's not much to say about education being compulsive. Anyone who can agree with forcibly detaining children is too far gone to even bother with.

First, I wouldn't trust that racist nutjob author, and Examiner.com isn't an objective news source.

And what is exactly wrong with trying to help the underprivileged? It would be better if the program was targeted socioeconomically rather than racially, but given the statistics that blacks and hispanics are under-performing their white counterparts academically, why not institute the program? You can obviously focus on the "racist" issue of it addressing primarily black schools, or you can focus on the goal of helping disadvantaged youths obtain higher academic achievement, likely leading to a better quality of life down the road.

Privileged are privileged because someone made it possible. There is someone behind it, someone's dedication, responsibility and hard work.

USA husbands can also get welfare. Anyways, it would be true that married people in Finland don't have to worry about paying for their kid's health care, but things like housing and food assistance there are based on household income, and I imagine the portion for the child is handled by the guardian parent, like in the US.

Part of the welfare reform passed under Clinton was to promote marriage. Here is one example :
