Academic Professor v.s. Millionaire Businessmen

As I said, it depends.

Uni is simply a tool to help you achieve your goals. Most people don't have any.

(and of course you can do great things in life without going to Uni, everyone's got different goals/need/reasons/motivation)

Exactly. 99% of people don't even know what they want to do with their lives so if they need Uni to help them discover that or give them direction then good for them.

Its funny because it seems like most people grow up and their parents control them. I mean I have friends that still to this day hang on their parents every word.

A lot of people are incapable of making decisions for themselves. So when I look at college I see a mother. People need to be told what to do.

Can you imagine what would happen for most people if all of the sudden they were given some money and we told them to make shit happen and do something with it and that they could do whatever they wanted. With no direction or guidance. 99% of people would go downhill with drugs, or would just try to ask other people what they should do with it.

Its kind of sad but less competition for the rest of us I guess.

Uni is a great money making scheme if you own the uni or work there.

In today's information society, you can find study peers, materials, discussions and lectures for free online.

The only thing uni provides that you can't get in the free market, is state restricted certification.

Unfortunately, some businesses require that certification, but there is no reason why they HAVE to hire people with that certification.

If you plan to be an entrepreneur, why would you need to certify yourself?

But when I said the above I am talking about all of the retards who are going to conquer the world with their biz administration degree.

There are people involved in the sciences that should be going to uni because they need access to professors, labs, equipment, funding, etc.

You may feel this is true in America, but I am not sure that particular truth travels well.

I'd sell them tools to them realize their dreams/goals/whatever. :)

I take lots of advanced CS classes (mostly individual modules) online. Sure.

Again, it can be so much more than that. To each his own, I have no problem with that.

Right, I am not denying it is an experience. It's just not, as pewep indicated, the only way to get that, or any particular experience.

Maybe not. I wouldn't know because I've never been outside of the US. I've just noticed that a lot of people really need someone else to give them the blueprint to life.

It can also offer direct one-to-one access to academics who are working at the cutting edge of their field, and millions of dollars worth of lab facilities. Neither of those can be accessed via the Internet. (although this only applies to science/engineering degrees, admittedly.)

Of course, the reason for this is... that universities have a monopoly on getting research grants.
