10 Useful Usability Findings and Guidelines Smashing Magazine

Good article by smashing magazine on usability factors. Thought it would make a good topic for a thread. How, beyond these points can we elevate usability of our pages & improve what is projected.

Interesting points from the article,

Jakob Nielsen’s study on how much users scroll (in Prioritizing Web Usability) revealed that only 23% of visitors scroll on their first visit to a website. This means that 77% of visitors won’t scroll; they’ll just view the content above the fold

Overall, I believe every point is equally important and has to be taken in consideration if you hope to have a converting LP.

Let's hear it guys, how do you lead the cattle to the slaughter as effectively as possible?

Very good read. This sparked a few ideas about the using faces and where they are looking.

I would be willing to bet that 90% of the people complaining about not making money will skip this article to their detriment.
 
Great article though I'm already familiar with most of the concepts explained there. There's a really good MarketingSherpa book on usability that includes most of what is there and quite a bit more, have a look for it, it's called...

I've got that handbook. Great info and very in depth!

Lots of great information is covered there, but most of it is fairly common sense and been discussed in previous case studies.

Smashing Magazine is great though, I'm on there a couple times a week for various reasons.

This technique is **gold** when you "get it".

One of the biggest mistakes I see is putting a face shot to the right of the text that you want visitors to read. It messes up the flow. (at least in the LTR-reading world).

Once you're aware of the technique, you'll start to notice how your attention is drawn to images of faces and then to whatever is to the right and slightly below.

I've split tested this in a lot of ways and it's amazing how well this works.

I always like to see that in print. :)

Great article - stored a bit away for future use and loved the refresher on the rest.
 
I enjoyed this article.

I am now using 600 px high header images with models looking down, so while I have no content above the fold, I am directing them towards my kickass footer where all great money links are.

Yep, people don't think so but great design really does matter. Humans are fickle fuckers after all. The best part about that article was the face thing and how subtle and effective it is. Also, humans have an overwhelmingly positive response to babies in advertisements than anything else due to instincts and such. Consumer psychology is a wonderful thing to study.

And as usual, Smashing Magazine rocks.
