I have included an artistic drawing of Him creating a mountain, trees, and a midget. Remember, we are all His creatures.

Popeye, Einstein and Hawking most certainly did/do not believe in a 'Supreme Being' in the sense that you're suggesting (ie; a personal god involved in your life and having a 'plan' for you). The religious love to fallaciously 'claim' them, and this irritates me to no end.
I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

What I have done is to show that it is possible for the way the universe began to be determined by the laws of science. In that case, it would not be necessary to appeal to God to decide how the universe began. This doesn't prove that there is no God, only that God is not necessary. [Stephen W. Hawking, Der Spiegel, 1989]
These men were/are agnostics at the least, and Deists at most - even a very small amount of research will reflect this. QED.

@Popeye you forgot to say that Darwin also denounced evolution on his death bed. That one is my favorite.

My favourite is Voltaire. When the priest asked him to denounce the devil on his deathbed he said: My young man, this is not the time to make enemies.

Best line ever.

I do not believe that is correct at least about Einstein if I remember correct. I looked him up in wikipedia and it says this about his beliefs. I guess I always like to research things before just taking them as is.

The question of scientific determinism gave rise to questions about Einstein's position on theological determinism, and even whether or not he believed in God. In 1929, Einstein told Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein "I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God Who concerns Himself with the fate and the doings of mankind."[50] In 1950, in a letter to M. Berkowitz, Einstein stated that "My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment."[51]

Don't put things in my mouth buddy....I said a "Supreme Start or Being" not in a god that we know from the Bible.

Yea..well that's why they say you never meet an atheist while on his dead bed! We are all only human and at our weakest when faced with death.

Again, please keep an open mind. I have never once stated any opinion concerning anything the Bible states as a belief of mine. A Supreme "start" or 'being" is an idea that I believe is necessary for this universe to have been created. This idea does not include any ideas in organized religion.

My position is not an easy one to take. Not only do I get attacked from the religious right but also from the loony left.

WTF: I came back to this damn thread..MUST STAY AWAY!

The only problem with not believing in a supreme being is the fact that Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and many other "great" minds believe in a supreme being. Most of their beliefs come about due to spending their life in science (especially physics and not enough time to explain how they came to those conclusions through science).

So my dilemma is: Should I go the route of the regular Joe Blow Lefty and hold strong to the atheist belief or should I consider to believe in a supreme being due to the fact that some of the most important and brilliant minds to ever walk the earth believe in a supreme being?

ummm...I think I will continue to believe!
I don't mean to be putting words in your mouuth, but in your first sentence you make it pretty clear by using the term "supreme being" twice. I don't see "supreme start" or any variation of it anywhere, in fact.

Did you read my post? :D

Well, dude, you're a deist. There's surely worse shit than that. As long as you don't try to kill people who threaten the penis-size of your deity, you can believe whatever the fuck you want. ;)

My position is not an easy one to take. Not only do I get attacked from the religious right but also from the loony left.

I'm a strong agnostic. :yin-yang:

Try arguing that one with people.

Don't stay away from this thread. You have nothing to lose but your illusions. :rasta:

I'm an agnostic, all other options are pure human arrogance. We don't know shit about much simpler things, yet we're trying to decide if there is a supreme being.

All this "Einstein said this" and "Darwin said this" are bullshit. These are ad hominem arguments that mean nothing.

We don't know; nobody knows. You can believe what you want, but believing in the absurd means you're stupid or delusional. Believing in something someone else told you, without evidence, is absurd.

Believing in an entity, a Prime Mover, a being, because science is not adequate to explain the origins of the universe is not absurd.

Believing that Jesus Fucking Christ was born on December 25th, coincidentally sharing many of the same attributes as pagan deities from centuries before his birth, is absurd. Believing that God planted dinosaur bones in the ground to test your faith is really fucking absurd. Believing you will get 72 virgins in your afterlife if you die in the act of murdering innocent people is pretty damned absurd.

Speaking of which, yesterday a Jehovah's Witness knocked on my door and I had a short conversation with him, after which he thanked me for being cordial and I told him to have a good day.

glad the atheists are starting to stand up for themselves, finally. our time is coming muthafuckas! there's no santa claus either. bwahahahahaha!

by the way, if you haven't read richard dawkins' book (i listened to it actually) it is excellent.

Since when is != Christian == leftist, leftwing, commie bastards???

::emp::

Nahh Jehovah's Witnesses are truely WACKED. Athesists are just dull. No Gods, no miracles, no Flying Spaghetti monsters.....ZZZZzzzzzzzz
Actually, I signed up to be a minister on one of those free online sites. I started my own religion. Unfortunately I don't remember offhand the name of my religion, I'd have to look it up.

It's as valid as any of the others.

I think that believing in 'supreme beings' directly stems from the age old question - Is there life after death?

The fact is, humans can't physically 'imagine' total obliteration. Thus, religion is nothing more than an imaginary safety net.

God..No..God...Thankfully organized religion tends to produce some effective charitable organizations. The Red Cross etc. has really helped alot of people down on their luck.

I may be wrong but I have never heard of a large atheist organization that reaches out to its fellow man in their time of need.
