When I was born (1959) there were 3 billion people on this planet. It has more than doubled since then.
If I live to be 80 or so it will probably be around 12 billion.
So in one lifetime, the population of the world will have gone from 3 to 12 billion people..

yaaaah i always wondered about this.... like if 6 billion people are puttin this much stress on the planet...how much would double that do... but then again the planet has a way of defending itself ala earthquakes,tsunamis,hurricanes, etc. And perhaps thats why the cure for aids,cancer etc is taking this long 8-)

Time to adapt Chinese 1 baby per family rule? ...although i think thats only enforced in the cities.
 
We need to get the fuck off this planet asap. Get some protection from all that sort of thing. We have a serious "all your eggs in one basket" problem here. I vote mars
 
This thread is an epic fail.

If you understand the division of labor, more people means more production, with means more aggregate productivity.

The problem isn't that the world's population is growing. The problem is that all of the social welfare programs are ponzi schemes, based upon constantly growing bases of workers to pay into them, to finance people who are retiring. In the west, birth rates are well into decline. People are living longer, but stopping work earlier, and it is not sustainable as we're now taxing our great grand-children's future labor to pay for current expenditures.

I'm pretty sure the favored argument is that the planet cannot produce enough food/fresh water to support the enormous population.

Of course, that argument usually fails to consider the sections of amazingly fertile land that either isn't being used, or is being used very inefficiently (ie, a good chunk of Africa). Say what you will about British imperialism, but at least they knew how to manage their farms.

Probably. But due to $$$, bad weather, political reasons a lot of ppl still starve. And this will only get worse.

I believe the salvation of mankind as a species lies in our ability to escape the atmosphere and find new places to impose totalitarian regimes, destroy nature and worship fruity religions.

You think we have the political will to spend what it will take in order to realize that dream?

I don't think going to Mars will solve anything. If we're going to survive as a species, we have to think bigger and further.

That will involve a lot of sex.

I hope you're up for it. It's for the good of humanity.
