California ordered to Release 30,000 Prisoners

For anyone interested, here are some interesting data regarding the prison system in CA:

How the Prisons Hold Us Captive by Stephen Cox

The California prison system, euphemistically known as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, employs more people than any other state agency. It has 69,000 authorized positions. Between 1998 and 2009, its budget almost tripled, reaching $10.3 billion dollars in the latter year – despite the fact that the number of people in prison had increased by only 9% during the period. (I'm using the Department's own figures here.) As of 2009, the average cost of maintaining an inmate in this system was more than $49,000, of which about a third was spent on healthcare. That is more than twice what my own excellent healthcare insurance costs me and my employer, the University of California, despite the fact that I, unlike 85% of the inmates in California prisons, am over 50 years old and therefore have higher real healthcare costs than the average California inmate.

There are a lot of problems with the system. The article linked above focuses on one of them.

Yeah... Lets add 30,000 prisoners to the state, in addition to the millions of criminals who are here illegally. This liberal pos state is going to hell fast.

They should hire those 30,000 prisoners to build new prisons which eventually will become their new homes..

OK. You are correct. Jail != prison.

So let me re-phrase my original post to say.

You can go to prison for a misdemeanor.

I challenge you to find someone that didn't already have a record or wasn't on Parole that went to Prison in California for a Misdemeanor. There's a reason 30,000 people are being released, and I'm guessing every one of them are non-violent offenders who went to Prison for Felony charges.
