End of the rainbow
So I haven't touched an apple product in 10 years and don't know shit about the iPad really ... but I'm interested in one and my shitty old laptop needs replacing so I'm wondering if I can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Can an iPad serve as an "emergency" work machine if necessary?

When I travel I only work when absolutely necessary (emergencies etc) so I wouldn't ever be using it much, but I still need the ability to run POP email, FTP, telnet clients etc. Can you do that kind of shit on an iPad??

If so the new iPad 2 is looking better than a new laptop ...

Dont know the answer though but for me, I use the iPad just to setup my daily/weekly/monthly schedules. Not that much useful to me. I'd still go for laptop

Does an iPad have a way to remote into a windows server?

Using it as a remote interface to the windows server of your choice would be the way to go to make a truly mobile office.

1. Pay $20 to remote your iPad 2 into windows server.
2. Head down to Mardi Gras & Spring break with iPad's new, dual cameras.
3. ???
4. Profit!

Remote Desktop Lite - RDP for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

I've tried a few on my iPhone, but the resolution is horrible. It might work better on the larger screen. Don't think you can get decent productivity off it on anything but a good WiFi connection - its sucks balls on 3G.
LOL! Did you notice how the app makers coincidentally had their windows desktop screen open to the Flash Download page? :jester:

Perhaps with a 4G connection the res problem would be tolerable. Let's hope.

Thanks for all the info guys. Perhaps an Android tablet is the way to go? I know you can get pretty much any app you want for android phones, so I'm sure it won't be long where it's the same for tablets if not already. I haven't done much research yet but the Xoom tablet looks OK. Apparently it's not an iPad killer but it seems decent...

What about a tablet? Don't own one myself but I'd want the bigger screen so I didn't go ape shit trying to work on an ipad.

I hate my smart phone for the same reason. Probably going the tablet route soon enough for mobile work.
