Alright, here's the deal, I just got out of jail about a month ago, was there for 94 days. It was for silly reasons, obstruction of justice... Caught drinking underage at a park with a few friends, I told the ranger a fake name, ran away, yada yada, got put on probation, skipped a few drug tests, yada yada. Long story short, now I'm on ISP. (Intensive Supervised Probation)

Well, in order to appease my PO I must get a job. A job! My online affiliate schemes won't qualify even though I could earn more money doing this, and doing what I love, than I ever will working, simultaneously, 12 hour days at multiple McDonalds.

Now, don't think I'm trying affiliate programs as a cheap way to get out of a job real quick for probation. Oh no, I've been into domain name trading, PPC advertising, arbitrage, and various other forms of online monetization. I actually got my start back in 02 by purchasing misspelled domain names, sleaze ball way to steal traffic I know, I still have a few of those babies churning profit. (Nice to get a check when you get out of jail :D)

Alright, to skip a lot more crap that I would love to type, here is my question... While doing this won't qualify as a job, I can take college courses that WILL qualify as a substitute.

What classes would anyone on here recommend taking?

I'm thinking I could aim for a business degree with a specialization in either marketing, internet marketing (would be the best), e-business, or something along those lines. My local community college, which is huge, probably over 20,000 students, has no classes related to internet marketing. It strikes me as very odd. So I'm looking more towards an online program probably.

I don't want to take classes on html, php, programming, yada, yada, I'm looking more towards the business or marketing side of things. I can always hire people that took those classes (or use tools). I'd be more interested in web analytic type classes, internet marketing, I dunno.

Any recommendations at all towards a direction?

Don't work at McDonalds.. take a contstruction job instead. Sure it's more physical, but you won't be treated like a fool, and it would probably look better on your resume than McDonalds! Plus they are known for hiring people who have been in jail. Even if you work in their office.

As for college classes that are similar to this industry.. take business courses (they can be applied to almost any industry), marketing classes, creative writing (can help you with copywriting and creativity in marketing), etc. The programming classes are boring usually, and the e-business courses focus on ebay and crap that you already know. Don't just aim for the easy A+ either, take something you can learn and use for the future.

...and all of this coming from a college dropout too.

were these felonies or misdemeanors? in texas if you run from the fuzz you get a felony!
anyways - create a business and have them as your employer, make your parents your boss or something? would that work?

I think he's underage, and some states require you to be 18 to register a company. Even so, I think part of the whole program he's in kinda bans him from taking an easy job owned by family members or himself. It can't be THAT simple..

It's a little more indirectly related than previous suggestions but Psychology could be useful. But why not just take whatever you are interested in and see where it takes you? I read that after Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed College he attended whatever classes he felt like, and a calligraphy class that he attended after he dropped out is the main reason we have the typefaces on PC's that we do today. Who knows when things can be useful down the road?

Jon - I wasn't seriously planning on working for McDonald's, lol, hell no! Thanks for the advice, creative writing would probably be excellent. I wonder if there's creative writing classes specifically for marketing purposes. Learn to create some excellent one page wonders, or do some quality pre-selling as I know chrislingle does. I'll probably take some general business classes at the minimum, add a creative writing class, and stay away from programming and e-business. (Are the e-business classes really aimed at eBay?! What a joke.)

Oh, and I am underage as far as drinking goes... But I am 20, so I could definitely incorporate. I think the main reason behind the job requirement is to insure that we are both productive, but more importantly keeping busy. Both my PO and drug evaluation counselor told me this. So, I think it CAN be as simple as incorporating to throw me under the legal umbrella and making myself CEO (which qualifies as employee, hopefully). Although I would probably need a way to track my work and prove that I'm doing something. PO is currently requiring pay stubs so....

Chrislingle/SEO_Mike - Chris these were misdemeanors thank God, I can still vote. I hadn't thought about incorporating, but I remember reading posts during my lurking days here about someone doing it for $100. Great idea! If I were to do this I would probably make myself boss as Mike suggested, if I were to put myself below my parents that may appear scammy to my PO.

mdm13 - I've thought about doing this too, actually this is what I originally planned on doing. I originally planned on getting some part time job, and supplementing it with college courses. College courses such as; culinary classes, ceramics, and things of that nature. In my free time I would be working at home on my computer, doing what we do. As I thought more about it though, it seems to be the smartest move to take classes that correspond to what I would be doing on here. Again, it would probably appear less scammy to my PO. Although, I may take one class that is purely of interest to me, to keep it fun.

Thanks Everyone!

Take the business marketing path. You will learn a lot, not only about marketing, but about biz law, management, etc.

Also, do not forget to take some completely off-the-wall classes. They'll help you think about the world in a broader sense.

Philosophy is OK, Psychology (of course) a favorite, take at least an introductory course.

Out of the joint huh?

There is no such thing as 'internet marketing class' or any that lowball crap. You might as well take daytrading courses or play slots.

College is about broadening your knowledge; not learning how to be an e-crap peddler.

Don't forget about drinking excessively and experimenting with mind altering substances.

I just got out of jail! LOL, that's not exactly the advice I need. Plus, I just got out of jail! You don't think I haven't done my fair share of drinking and experimenting?! LOL Oh yeah, I just got out of jail!

Speaking of experimenting with drugs... Anyone heard of salvia divinorum? It's legal and you trip balls. Not recommended for parties...

Salvia sux....
Its a short trip and you have to smoke a rack load of that crap.

Not if you purchase the extract, you can ghost hit one bowl and forget where you are. My friends and I have experimented with the 40x, then again I will never do this shit again. Not worth it. In fact, why did I even mention it? Plus, it's expensive. And yeah, it is a short trip. Wait, salvia sux....

Anyone ever heard of LSA? You can extract it from Morning Glory seeds, also legal.... (Very similar in chemical structure to LSD, possibly a precursor to it, definitely an analog)

Fuck, salvia is awsome! people trash it because its legal but its a fun time. Mabye it hits people differently. 10x is about right..
