Congratulations USA

Would you three like to get a room?

The question was about whether or not there was fracking going on directly underneath the feet of Canadian residents. My suggestion was that there is plenty room northwards that it doesn't have to be done under your very feet.

If you're going to refute me, please stay on subject. There's simply no point in talking about the beauty of the canadian wilderness or its' political ownership in a thread about fracking in the usa!

I personally know firms that are fracking right outside of Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon & Regina. Are those cities unpopulated?

Papajohn is just scientifically oriented. Does common sense trump science in your world view?

I know Papajohn. I know he's a smart guy. It doesn't take a scientific genius to deduce that pumping billions of gallons of highly toxic slurry into the ground is going to cause problems and there's already mounting evidence to show that it's damaging the environment and, more importantly ruining, precious drinking water reserves.

The fucked up, and typical, part about Papajohn's view about scientific evidence is the investigation AFTER the fact. Let big business do what they want and do the scientific investigation after they've already done the damage. Even though there's plenty of evidence to show that it may be dangerous and harmful to us now, let them continue uninterrupted and to grow at an uncontrolled rate, and maybe in 10 or 20 years we'll look into things if more people become sick and more environmental damage becomes apparent.

That's not how things should be done.

If we had total prior restraint on innovation we'd probably still be living in caves.

I have to be honest.

I wouldn't make it in the jungle.

The reality is that the 'proof' provided by anti-fracking groups is severely lacking in any sort of peer-reviewed study.
Peer review is irrelevant. Getting 10 idiots to agree upon something is relatively easy to do.

Look at any STS thread.

Oh great how did I miss this fracking thread?

A couple of things:

Like anything else, technology in the hands of morons can do bad things. There have been incidents where groundwater got contaminated because some good ole boys decided to blow up stuff too close to the surface. And there have been earthquakes caused by fracking because some good ole boys decided to blow up stuff too close to limestone cliffs.

In the oil and gas industry, for sure there are a few idiotic cowboys running around.

HOWEVER, when you say fracking, I think a lot of people think "fracking" describes all or most of the technological innovations that are transforming the North American oil industry. It does not.

To do a frack, that means to have small controlled explosions along the length of a drill pipeline with rubber joints (oh man, how I am simplifying). That's all.

If you banned fracking, that doesn't mean you have banned horizontal drilling, which is has been a even BIGGER technological innovation to the industry than fracking. There is also the use of software to manage the extraction of oil and gas by controlled waterflooding (as opposed to uncontrolled waterflooding of the last 30 years).

In short people are throwing around "fracking" like it's a black-and-white thing. It's not. What is happening is just a little more complex than what most people think is happening.

Now I am in favour of a ban on fracking? Of course I am. There should no fracking within 500 feet of an aquifer. This is fucking obvious, and most people in the oil and gas industry would sign off a ban like with no problems. Duh.

Fortunately A LOT of gas and oil deposits are much deeper than any aquifers (think 1000s of feet), so such a ban would barely raise a hiccup in current drilling efforts.

Oh boy, can hardly wait for posts to call me out saying I am full of shit and linking to the dipshit greenie websites. Here it comes....

^^^full of shit and linking to dipshit greenie websites....I mean, tl;dr

And some of them are kinda big, like this one:

Damn, sucks that all that fracking (and horizontal drilling) in North Dakota is going down right on top of that aquifier. Oh wait...well it sucks that the proposed Green River projects in SW Wyoming, NW Colorado and NE Utah is too...what? It's not? What was your point again?

Wow. I thought you were from CA. Never heard of Hetch Hetchy controversy?

Gotta admit, it made for some pretty spectacular out of the boat climbing. /glass half full

Ummmmmmm, the map you just attached makes no reference to NORTH Dakota. That massive aquifer so nicely highlighted on the map shows a big 'un in NEBRASKA. The map doesn't even show North Dakota, it shows South Dakota.

Please try again to show I am full of shit. I'm sure you can do better.

You fail at comprehending my incomprehensible. Your post made perfect sense to me, I just made fun of the last line.

I QUOTED the map luke posted because exactly as you pointed out, it's nowhere near the Bakken. Derp derp bleep bloop carry on.

I'm in the middle of doing my corporate year-end doing expenses at the command of my CGA who won't sign off on my books unless I wade through all this shit.

I am checking Wickedfire every 90 seconds to see if anybody will get in a political pissing match with me. So that I can put off doing this paperwork.

COME AT ME BROS!!!

Holy shit, how the hell did I drop so much coin on services in the BST last year? What the fuck I could have bought XRumer and Scrapebox licenses AND an Indian to run the software for what I paid in 2011-2012.

ANARCHY IS REALLY, REALLY DUMB. I THINK OBAMA IS DOING A GREAT JOB. AMERICA IS A FANTASTIC COUNTRY. AND THE EARTH IS ROUND LIKE YOUR HEAD...

Well, when it comes to industry and science, nearly everyone would agree that germany is one of top numbers in the world, or?

And now they are dropping it in the energy toilet just because the deceided to be a bunch of energy smurfs? Really?

The point is this:

They have a incredible strong economy atm, giving them the biggest tax income ever.

And they spend alot of that money to move their whole energy system on the next level - a level which will be stable at some point even without oil & nuclear power.

You can do some research - if the plans germany have work they will have around 2025 to 2030 a more expensive ( - as today -) but stable energy source. The costs will stay stable after that and not grow much! And thats the point of it.

After 2025 they will be able to recover the costs because they have alot less to invest and the whole system is stable and more of less working without using non "green" energy recources.

If it works, they will overcome most of the energy problems we all will run it.

Sounds not that stupid to me.

Thats a long aiming plan - and not the first one they did.
Their Agenda 2010 was a economy recovery over nearly 10 years.
As it started, they was the "sick man of europe" ... now they are back stronger then ever.

Also remarkable: That plan is today driven by their conservative party!
Its not an idee from some green punks or socialists.

I would bet my money on them when it comes to industry and science, for sure.
