So when you say it is more likely to be murdered are you saying that proportionately 18,000 murders out of the entire US population is more than 824 accidental deaths out of all gun owners?

(I'm not disagreeing -- I don't know the numbers, I'm just asking how you decided that it is more likely to be murdered than shot accidentally.)

Ok so looking just at gun owners are they more likely to shoot themselves or be murdered? That info would only be useful if we also knew how many gun owners have successfully defended themselves from being murdered, is there any data available about that?
 


A lot of gun owners are just trigger happy and looking for a reason to shoot someone. It's really pathetic IMO.

This is a good point as we don't really know what his motivations were.

If he didn't have a gun she should have at least tried communicating with him while he was outside. ("What the fuck do you want?!, etc.")

She killed him and she doesn't even know what he wanted.

I would have been like I have a shotgun here you better get the fuck outta here. Depending on his response to this I may or may not shoot him.
 
It's pretty sad that people are judging this woman who was put in a crazy situation and end up defending a criminal drug addict. It's amazing the depths some will sink to in order to maintain their philosophical paradigm.
 
You really shouldn't try to talk to someone you can't see when they are breaking in your house unless they know you have the drop on them (aka deer in headlights), otherwise the guy's already pretty froggy, you say jump and he's gonna jump.

From the sound of it, he was running around the outside of the house while she was on the phone and she didn't know where he was gonna come in. Being on the phone was distracting her and she ended up in a position where she had to be reactive.

What if this guy was desperately trying to save his sister? Who knows? This woman doesn't know either. She just shot.

Don't get me wrong, everyone has a right to protect themselves. Personally, I would like to know that that's what I'm actually doing and not just killing a guy trying to save his sister.

Odds are though that he was a nut fuck...but still... shoot first and ask questions later is fucking retarded. Now she has to live with herself and she's not even sure what the man was doing.
 
No, people need to act right -- if this guy was trying to save his sister he fucked up, not the lady, by acting like a maniac. He put the lady in a situation where she was not comfortable with any other alternative -- if you put someone who you are interacting with to a decision that won't support your goal in the interaction then you fail, not the other person. People want to act like assholes and then be excused for it. A feeling of powerlessness against that kind of behavior is what forces people in to the shoot first ask questions later mindset and this is a perfect example of that, she had no choice here...

Did he even know she was there? Did she even make her presence known?

Maybe he was acting like a maniac because he was:

- high

- desperately trying to save his sister.

- assumed no one was in the house (since she didn't make her presence known) hence, goes on to bang the door down.

I mean she has no idea why she killed this man. She thinks she killed him because he was trying to break in and rob/kill her. He may have been trying to break in (because he didn't know she was there) to make a 911 phone call.

Which is it? We don't know. She shot him.

(I'm just trying to look at both sides of the story.)

It's extraordinarily easy to say this man obviously deserved it...but did he? It isn't clear. (as far as the very limited details I'm aware of)

Assume you were:

- high

- desperately trying to save your sister

- trying to break into an apparently empty house to call the police (I can actually imagine myself in this scenario...no cell phone, no one else around, extremely desperate etc.)

All of a sudden BOOM!.... The house wasn't empty...

He was pounding on her door...she doesn't respond at all.

He breaks in...she suddenly makes her presence known by shooting him.

He was probably just looking for help.

She was scared shitless and acted in that manner. (and can't hold it against her) Doesn't mean this guy deserved to be killed.

Edit: As soon as I found out if this guy had nefarious intentions I'll say, "It's good she shot the motherfucker". Until then... not so clear.

I'm curious about the demographics of the people that are placing the blame on the woman. Please correct me where I am wrong because I am sincerely curious. I'm willing to bet you are:

- Male
- Younger than the victim (the old lady that is), between early 20s and late 30s
- Probably think you could hold your own in a fight if you had to defend yourself

I'm willing to bet you are not:
- Female
- Older than 45
- Completely aware that without a gun you have no chance against a much larger male if he has violent intentions toward you.

I live in the same state as you do, I know a shit load of gun owners. I also know that I don't have to worry about any of them shooting me since they are responsible gun owners and I have no intentions of robbing their houses or raping their wives.
