If you need medical assistance, Cuba ironically has one of the best systems in the world, especially better than the American system despite the Yankee government doing its best to cripple Cuba in every way possible.

I'm a big fan of their cigars. Beyond that, I can't comment intelligently.

Others may chime in with the tourist angle, conditions here's my take.

Sailed over a couple of times from KW to some of the nicest people I have ever met. Open, friendly, and the girls can be epic gorgeous. The ingenuity to keep the cars / infrastructure going is amazing. When someone brings multiple families across the Florida Straits in a floating 1950's pickup you don't send them back you hire them at NASA imo. No offense intended to anyone but if you are use to a certain Cuban attitude in Miami you may be pleasantly surprised with Cuba. When the Elián González riots happened in Miami and they were burning tires in the streets of my country you can just go fuck yourselves.

Politics and propaganda was something they taught in school about other countries. New meaning for me after I went over.

My first trip going over was on this one State: U.S. indicts Key West-to-Cuba sailboat racers That cost Michele everything and all charges ended being dropped. Just politics.

OP if you get a chance side step the tourist conveyor belt. You can hire a local for nothing with a vintage ride to drive you away from the facade. The poverty and conditions can be sobering. But it is also what makes many of these fine people real. The photoshopped, airbrushed, staged plastic image in your opening post pales in comparison. The girl you just walked by in a hand-me-down dress and smiled at you with no make up can rock your world. Good people and look forwarding to returning.

TLDR; "Highly recommend, will buy again"

been twice to Veradero... it'ss naaicceee... enjoyed both times. Get Cubans, drink Rum, practice your spanish... and enjoy the beach.

Thanks for all the responses.

Interesting story will read more about it soon.

I've done a lot of traveling to developing nations, and am not really too much into the tourist vibe. Will definitely roll off the beaten path. A big part of traveling for me is to discover the culture, people and the art.

Thanks for the input, sounds like a fascinating place.

screw the politics, cheers

That simply wasn't true:
WikiLeaks cables: Michael Moore film Sicko was 'not banned' in Cuba | World news | guardian.co.uk

Seriously, Cuba is awesome!!! It was cool going there as an American, different from what I expected. They were some of the friendliest people. I've traveled around N. America, Europe and Asia (I currently live in Malaysia) and Cuba is one of my favorite places. they have an International Jazz Festival sometime in Feb. That's a good time to go for awesome music. They food sucks, though. That's my only complaint.

Um, yes it was. Defectors who were there at the time reported that though it was aired, it was highly censored. On top of that, the ban of it was first reported in the cables in Jan 2008, and it was supposedly aired in April 2008.

Here's one quote
"I'm from Cuba and yes we saw the film but all references to public healthcare in other countries was censored. They didn't show the British doctor. Neither the Norwegian example. I saw all that here in the US"

Trusting Michael Moore = logic fail.

Was in Cuba about 2 months ago for a short trip. Havana is amazing. Truly a staggeringly pretty place.

Not too safe at night, but you can just catch taxis everywhere if you wish. My 5'0 girlfriend isn't much protection so we got hassled a little bit. Thankfully being 6'5 scares most people away.

I'd recommend going for sure. Just try to start any conversation with a bit of Spanish and the majority of people (like everywhere in the world), will be more than friendly and helpful.

Plus, the cigars are cheap and fantastic!

I'll be going back in the future for sure, but for now, enjoy!

It's an O.K destination if all you want is to lay on the beach all day sipping mojitos, also the people are friendly.

On the other hand they never heard of quality. I stayed in what was, at least at the time, the best hotel in varadero, Paradisus. For 200+ euros a night the room was shitty and the food sucked.

It's a good experience if you want to know what communism is all about. Miles and miles of uncultivated land and most people living in slummy conditions, especially away from tourist areas.

Also, the guy that said Havana is a pretty city must be joking, the city lies in ruins, very sad.

LOL. I had to pay $100 for some paracetamol (costs 1 euro in Portugal) because I was a foreigner, so it's probably not the best place to fell ill.

my brother went there for a bachelor party about 5-6 years ago and loved it.
scuba diving was good, night life was good also

picture is not representative of the city as whole. Historic parts are pretty amazing. Parts of Montreal look similar to the pic above, but the whole city's not like that.

For an interesting experience consider renting an appartment in Havana.

Just don't expect to bring any Cuban girls there. They have to sign their passport into the log book. Nobody wants to be associated with a Gaijin down there for the rest of their lives.

this is 100% the truth. I am cuban, born and raised there and go every year.

That said, with dollars ( or CUCs, convertible currency youll need to change your dollars to as soon as you land, giving Fidel 20% in the process ) youll have an amazing time.

Best beaches of the Caribbean, cheap booze and incredible whores. Just dont say shit about the beard or youll be in jail for a while.
