Do you think the US will default?

Surprised this particular form of puppetry is getting the attention this time that it is. I'd have figured the playoff fashion election cycle would be enough for the media to polititain us.

Ultimately all of the media spends the majority of it's time and resources showing whatever will get them the most ratings.

This form of puppetry as you say is therefore just what the majority of fickle peons here find most entertaining ATM.

Next week they'll demand some politician cheat on his wife... Or perhaps a husband this time. ;)

Hearing the news in Australia everything is indicative of the US Defaulting... Has anyone from the states got any updates that would indicate which way it is going to go?
No.

Expect a raising of the debt limit with enough Republican concessions granted, that both sides will be able to claim victory, but neither side wins.

Even if they don't reach an agreement, I bet the money will last a little longer than August 2nd, plus I bet the president could somehow immediately raise the limit if he wanted to through like an executive order or something.

Also, even if they do start to run out of money. They can stop a bunch of payments of stuff that isn't necessary and continue payments to debt holders, and that wouldn't be considered a default.

The whole thing is so extremely stupid. They should have reached an agreement a long time ago, but no, they have to fight until the whole government almost collapses.... Idiots.

Ha! No this is all bullshit media coverage. There is zero chance they would default. Zero.

The US defaults constantly by printing new money and devaluing the currency. I think the US dollar is down like 35% over the last 10 years.

It's slow and insidious and people are paying for the default right now, and since the government refuses to shrink, they will keep paying for the default in perpetuity.

Its funny. Remember when people would say social security will run out in 30-40 years?

They are showing that time table on msnbc that shows it ran out years ago and they have been borrowing money to make loan payments as well as social security payments.

Fuckin mooks, stole all the "working classes" retirement money to fund wars and whatever else... Voters... lol

^^^ that's a good point then those same people turn their fingers and point them at evil rich people who are not willing to pich in their "fair share"

From what I've seen/heard we'll have more than enough revenue to pay off the actual DEBT PAYMENTS even without any increase in the debt limit whatsoever.

Ideally, it's the other things that will be not paid (ie social security payments, medicare, etc). We'd also be forced to stop paying for most troops, military spending, roads, etc.

It's about prioritizing what we pay off with the money we do have. I'm pretty sure that debt payments always get first priority... so there should be no true default.

But not paying for SS payments, medicare, troops, etc would definitely throw us into a deep depression probably worse than the 30's - but defaulting on debt payments would be even worse. I'd love to kill social security now before i have to put more money into a dying program but it would be nice if we could do it without an Armageddon.

Anyway I heard the President alone gets to decide how the revenue is spent so if he decided to default on the debt payments instead of social programs he'd earn some serious infamy.

I'll echo what a lot of people are saying on here, and that is that it will be another midnight showdown and some less-than-spectacular deal will be struck. I'm surprised that this stayed relatively civil for this type of post but people on here are a lot more sane than the talking heads (crazy, I know).

I don't think it matters who is in office, its too divided to lose face for anyone so they just do tricks until the last minute.

NO chance of default. This is nothing more that the two puppet factions of banker control (Dems & Repubs) hyping up another "crisis" so that they can screw the American people. Their mutual goal is to bring in harsh austerity measures (as bankers demand), ..and scare the people into demanding them (re. Obama's speach). I predict big cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Education, and the rest of the social safety net before all this political theater is done.

Also there is this minor detail...

There are national security directives and executive orders already on the books, as well as the 14th Amendment, that Obama can invoke to set aside the debt ceiling.
