Don't you hate it when you suddenly become aware of your own breathing?

I only hate it because then you focus on the breathing and for some reason consciously controlling your breathing doesn't work the same.

DAMN YOU!

I'm so f-ing OCD I'll be thinking about it all day now.

...needless to say you're not alone in this neurotic affliction.
Yea, I'm pretty OCD myself. And the breathing isn't the only thing I get worked up over. I think it's because I can be prone to anxiety and panic.
Not quite as bad as being aware of your own blinking.
Haha! I do that from time to time too.
for some reason I do both when I'm drunk
Actually I do either when I'm drunk. Ahh the sweet, sweet refuge from all the nutty thoughts. I love you booze.
You guys have some issues.
Yep.
I'm OCD as fuck man....SO NOT COOL
Same here. I gotta say, I'm finding a certain level of comfort at all us nitty people on Wickedfire, though I do got to say, I'm not at all surprised.
stop being so fat and you wont hear yourself breathing
NO IT PROTECTS ME FROM ALL THE LASER BEAM THINKING AIMED AT MY SOUL TRYING TO DESTROY ME AND READ MY MIND AND TAKE THE GOOD LIGHT THOUGHTS FOR THEMSELVES AND LEAVE ME WITH THE DARK VIPERS IN MY HEAD THAT REACH OUT AND CHOKE PEOPLE THAT I CANT CONTROL AND I"M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THEY DO!

Besides, I'm not fat. I'm big boned.

PEW PEW PEW
I'm sure it can get annoying. But in another setting, it's actually pretty cool. It's the first step in meditation--being aware of your breathing. Then you focus on a subpart of the breathing cycle--slowing shutting off the mind until all your attention is one small aspect of your breathing. Then everything becomes very quiet and the mind is stilled.

I noticed that my productivity skyrockets if I meditate at least once per week. Helps tremendously with FOCUS.
Yep, meditation is great, I don't do it nearly as often as I should. I'm moving to Chattanooga here in a few weeks and there is a Buddhist meditation center there I plan on getting involved with.
Falling asleep kind of gets me. Just laying in bed knowing that any minute your mind is just going to *click* and go into a completely different mode without you even realizing it.

Keeps me up sometimes lol.
Oh great, that’s one I haven’t thought of yet. Thanks. Looks like I'm not getting any sleep tonight.
$5 Submissions: Is there a particular form of meditation you use?
I learnt Vipashana meditation as a teenager to help me deal with anger issues, but it's really helped me just think things through rationally pretty much all the time... Very useful.
I'll have to look into that HarveyJ. I have more anxiety issues than anger issues, but, they are both kind of related.
the worst is trying to fall asleep and becoming aware of your eye ball movements (while your eyes are closed)... it'll drive u crazy and give u a headache for many nights
I do this a lot too. My eyeballs hurt sometimes because of it.
Yeah if you lie there and keep pushing out any thoughts that come into your mind (very difficult) so your thoughts are just empty while focusing on your breathing or heartbeat, you trick your body into thinking your asleep... and your body actually goes to sleep but your mind is still awake. Your body releases a chemical that paralyses you so you don’t 'act out' your dreams (this is why you get sleep paralysis). You can feel your eyes flickering in their REM cycle, if you don’t get freaked out at that point this is how you have 'out of body' experiences, lucid dreams and whatnot.

Delving into the depths of your subconciousness is fun.
I'm way into OBEs, though I've only had one that I remember. I really like Robert Bruce from Australia, he's got some amazing books on OBEs.

LOL... the breathing doesn't drive me nuts... what I hate is being aware of your HEARTBEAT!

Man! You got some hearing skills. If you can hear my heartbeat ;)

Becoming aware of your own breathing is not as bad as others becoming aware of your breathing before you do. Or becoming aware of others breathing. IMO.

Get religion. I recommend traditional Catholicism (Latin Mass). If you haven't been to a Sung Latin Mass performed by a priest who believes in what he's doing, you haven't lived.

Praying for the well-being of others is better than meditating. Plus you get in contact with the Overlords of the Universe; if you can't handle your problems, they can help.

On sleeping:

Here's a trick: Keep your eyes open, open I say! Imagine you're a spy, desperately trying not to sleep. Keep those eyelids open, soldier!

Five minutes later => ZZZZZZzzzzzzz.

This assumes you are genuinely tired, it's roughly the time you normally sleep, you haven't been drinking coffee, watching exciting TV or playing Counter Strike up to four hours previously (it's that bad, CS I mean, really gets the adrenaline going).

Manual labour is a good way to ensure a good night's kip. Office work (including computer work) requires more sleep to recover from. Manual workers need less. A bit of exercise wouldn't hurt.

On a similar note,
I have days when I suddenly become aware of my glasses. or more specific, I become aware of the rim.

ARGHHHHH!

Always takes at least a day to get rid of.

Did that too, that's when I got contacts lol.

By the way, thanks fuckers - couldn't get to bed for 3 hours last night because I was listening to my breathing. Then once that was gone, I HEARD MY HEART. DAMN YOU ALL!

It's funny that you bring this up. Being 7 Months pregnant, I am now breathing like a fat person. I think it has to do with all the extra blood I'm creating and then need for oxygen. It's annoying as hell, especially when I'm trying to fall asleep. Plus I can hear my heart and it's going much faster than normal, trying to pump all the blood and I think I'm going to have a heart attack. That doesn't help me fall asleep any faster.

Another thing that sometimes gets me (that has nothing to do with pregnancy) is I have a freckle on then side of my nose that for some reason sticks out in my vision and I get all crossed eyed sometimes when it keeps catching my attention.

I would swap to being aware of hearing my own breathing any day from the nightmare of tinnitus which I suffer from.

Tinnitus is ringing in the ears after eardrum damage caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise

Its not so bad when you got plenty of background noise that kind of masks it during the day but when its quiet or you are trying to get to sleep I got something like the high pitched noise of a jet engine in my ear. Sometimes its verging on the unbearable...

I'm told i got hearing damage, the legacy of miss spent younger days and countless nights spent standing too near the speakers in clubs playing super loud house music!

Oh and theres no remedy apparently. Now I am paying the price..Yea I know, what a silly fucker..!

I hate it when I become aware of other people's breathing. Especially the mouth breathers, close your mouth and breathe through your fucking nose!

Start doing Yoga (I recommend "Power Yoga") - you will be aware of your breathing in a positive way and will be able to synchronize it when you physically exert yourself. Proper breathing improves your balance and improves your pain tolerance by about 1/2.
