I think smaller or funny KWs are better for a 30 day competition.

+1 for Political or 2012 Apocalypse related.

Also winner should get a sticky in BST section or something like that to commemorate their dominance.

Here's my pitch for why I think a bullshit term makes more sense for this contest then a real term:

Its a WF SEO contest; if we use a term that is already out there, it dilutes the effect of the actual SEO skillz that members can put to use. Someone like me doesn't have to know anything about how to rank for the term "blue widget", I'll just go out and make an offer to whomever owns a site that already is Top 10 for it, that doesnt demonstrate any SEO skill at all, just the ability to negotiate a domain buy. A bullshit term levels the playing field and puts everybody at the same starting point. Also, there are no "non-competitors" in the mix/SERPS

With a bullshit term, the contest can be shorter, everyone that actually ends up ranking in the SERPs for it is going to be doing so because they are participating in the contest, not because they have owned a somewhat-related domain for years and have a headstart that new contest participants can't match, Age and aged backlinks.

Also, with a bullshit term, we have less geniuses yapping about "no way I'd rank a site for XYZ term for these weak prizes, that is worth $94.38 CPC according to [obscure keyword tool], durr". If you win, its a pure win, you demonstrated that you could beat your WF brothers in a fair fight, winner take all. This is a contest between WFers for some cool prizes and bragging rights, not your actual day job.

There is a reason that all the big SEO contests (Nigritude, elursrebmem n7v, etc) used bullshit terms instead of real one, its the only way to truly compare who is the best when dealing with a limited timeframe and tracking actual results.

no way i'm competing against you evil geniuses, but agree with this.

I like this idea. We could sell survival kits, freeze dried food, shelters, and like you said - the T shirt. :) Do some press releases...get on 60 minutes....this would be fun.

Now we are getting somewhere. Maybe a current event or maybe some kind of spoof or rumor that could wind up getting some actual publicity or even going viral

apocalypse party in hawaii on the date. crown the winner. die in style.

If you want to use a REAL keyword don't use 2012 shit, because in 2013 that'll be trash. You might as well use a fake kw. You could use something like "apocalypse" which will have no EMDs available, SOME competition on the main page (including one of those annoying wiki things) and also a few N/A so it'll definitely be do-able and will have residual traffic for years (who doesn't like a good apocalypse now and then?)

Imo at the end of it get everyone together and put together a quick what works and what doesn't case study for sale. Split the proceeds between everyone/top 3/winner or what ever. Shit each one of you could make an e-book for WaFo from it and make bank.

As time gets closer ill see what I have to offer to the prize pool, maybe some copywriting or cash :)

I'm interested. I like the idea of a real term, or perhaps something that could generate some sort of buzz outside of these circles if we dominate page 1/page 2.

I also like the idea of a 2-month competition as opposed to 30 days.
