Check these box bungalows out:

Box Bungalows

In most places, you can add a structure under 120 sq feet without a building permit. However, you may need a permit to get the utilities connected. They start around $15k w/o windows installed, etc. Probably around $25k with windows, insulation, bathroom, and kitchen.

Find a piece of land and put your bungalow on it. Plow your monies back into your biz. Sick of an area? Move your bungalow. They come assembled, so they can be easily moved.

Here's a video tour of one:

I'm considering getting one. Anyone have suitable property around Glendale, CA?

Trust me it's not fun living in a house this size. Growing up poor sucks.

EDIT:

for the price of some of the price of some of these you can get a real house.

These would definitely be ideal for countries in South America, or even in the heart of Europe. Probably not ideal for the US tho.

CA is practically a 3rd world country already but at 1st world prices. Save the $400k+ you'd need for a shack and put one these up. Use the savings to buy something on the beach in SA.

$25k with windows? fuck that. You can get a real house for that much now.

If you build it your self, or if they are like 5k then its a cool idea.

Edit: Ive seen houses here for 30-40k, in St Petersburg FL. Just so your know i didn't mean Detroit or something.

these look like playhouses. wouldn't a used manufactured home be a more viable option if you are trying to go super cheap? you would get at least 10 times the square footage for the price.

LOL if these shits were like $1k they'd be worth it. For $25k you can live in a pretty luxurious 1 bedroom for 1.5 years, or a shitty 1 bedroom for 5 years. By then you should be making enough to at least afford an apartment in the hood.

Also, good luck not getting robbed living in the middle of a field in that shit.

As you mentioned the permits kill you. Between the water meter, sewer connect, development fees, and permit fees you will be set back $30K+.

But the home prices they are quoting are too much really. Building is cheaper than you think and Manufactured homes like those at about 600 sq ft are likely under $20K and they look the same.

Anyhow - you could build it for $50K then - plus lot cost of course - there's the rub.

Glendale's a tough place to find land though - you may have to commute to Simi Valley or Lancaster or Riverside to swing it.

In LA, a studio apartment in a decent part of town can set you back $1k/month. Two years of rent and you have your tiny house. You can buy the plans and build it yourself for a lot less. But I'd rather pay someone else, so I don't wake up with a tiny beam smashed on my head.

I'd pop one of these on one of my forested properties and call it an office for taxes, lol. Good enough to pass as a cabin in my book.

It's funny what you consider a shack, but if living in a shed makes you happy go for it.

just build a house yourself for 1/2 the price of a pre-built one. couldn't build a normal house for that much, but for like $150k you could probably build something you'd pay $300k for on the market.
