Enlighten me. You're lumping all religious people into one category.
I know plenty of religious people, and I can make a list of things they want to do too:
- Live in peace
- Make a living
- Have a family
- Enjoy life
Maybe, just maybe you're referring to the 0.1% who want to dictate the way everybody should live. Maybe you haven't ever actually met a religious person, but not everybody is like that.
EDIT: And maybe, judging by the vehemence of your post, you're just another angry Internet atheist. I suggest you actually spend some time around "religious freaks" before jumping to conclusions.
Nicely said. My mom and grandma are "religious freaks" to an extent.
I can break the entire thing down with pure logic.
They have absolutely nothing in life. They are on the poorest end of poverty, they are both handicapped from being hit by a drunk driver 20 years ago, they have horrible health, and they have made it through a good chunk of their lives just to come out with absolutely nothing now. They even share a car and home.
That being said, they turn to god. And it keeps them hoping... It may not actually change anything for them, but it is what keeps them pushing through the day, and it helps lift some of the stresses of life from their shoulders, which in their vulnerable state, could crush them.
They do "go on" about God and everything from time to time, but as annoying as it can get, the truth about it is, they are trying to help.
Me: "Im fucking broke, I can't pay my bills, my friends are dying and in prison"
Mom and Grandma: "Just give your life to god. Let him handle this stuff for you, ask him to help you and make things better"
At the time, it pisses me off... How the fuck is God going to pay my bills?
But then I realize the truth to it all... They are telling me to let it go, not worry about it, and by asking God to take care of it, I can relax a little bit and make more clear and strategic decisions and choices in life.
It really does all make sense.
It isn't about having a "being" intervene. It's about hope, and faith in your own life and decisions. Don't stress about it so much, keep your head clear and held high, and don't hate everyone around you.
That's my .02
