Firearms thread - enthusiasts only please

Mmmmmm... A gun shop near me just got a Glock 23 in for $599.

Why do people so passionately hate Glocks? I've enjoyed everytime I've rented one at the range.

Most popular modern firearm on the market.

And they're CHEAP compared to most other firearms.

If you really shop and are ok with used, you can easily find one in the mid $300s. I know I can usually get gen2 used glock 22/17/21 in that price range most of the time.

I'll speak for the 1911 fags :D (being one myself)

For me, the reason I used to hate Glocks is they're just boring. I like guns that have history, and a level of mechanical coolness. Glocks have neither IMHO. Another reason why I didn't like Glocks is because everybody loves them. No shit. If something is uber-popular I probably hate it.

But, mostly it was the trigger and plastic. Once you're used to a good 1911 trigger, everything else sucks. It's a fact. So, I hated the Glock trigger.

Then, there's the fact that they're plastic. Hate plastic guns. Still do, but I make an exception for Glocks.

After buying one, and shooting one, I found that they're very good guns. Performance is good, aim is good, trigger is better than most other non-1911's (still not a 1911 though) and reliability is insanely good.

So, if you're not a 1911 snob like me, or tend to like "tacticool" type guns, you will LOVE a Glock. Even if you are a 1911 snob, you have to give Glocks their due. They are exceptionally good hand guns and I would trust my life carrying one. (I still prefer 3 pounds of 1911 on my hip though).

/edit/ I'm probably going to get another 27 to replace the one I foolishly traded away. Or better yet, a 30 (being a 45 ACP fag also)

Damn you mike now I have to get a new 1911

The good news is one can have both. How can you not love a 1911, or a glock? So I say fuck it get em both. One of the nice things about glocks is their simplicity. Ready to go right out of the box. While with a 1911 there is no limit to the endless customization you can do.

Agreed.

First thing I do with any 1911 is change the trigger. Almost every stock 1911 comes with the long trigger. I have small hands, so I get a short trigger and fit it. Then I like a better (Wilson Combat or Ed Brown) sear and crisper break. So, new hammer and sear come next. Upgrade the sights, put some sweet grips from Sarge's Grips on it, and you have yourself a damn near custom 1911 for under $1500. Assuming you start with something like a Kimber Custom II ($799 - the seller I bought mine from, they're excellent). Don't forget shock buffers and extra springs. Last, get a good grease in a syringe to keep the whole thing lubed.

For guys like me that like to tinker, 1911's are a lot of fun.

That's my carry gun.

That's the same story my 1 eyed neighbor told me

lol well be-careful then, his sights are zero'd in and he is pissed =D

I actually agree, you should always wear safety goggles and I always do. I lifted them up for a few shots because I couldn't see and need to make some micro adjustments.

Get it man, everyone should have at least one in their arsenal. They are super reliable, easy maintenance, very accurate and you can have a blast customizing them. Its my every day carry, its light, comfortable and I know it will work everytime I need it.

go to glockstore.com and have fun! =D

I have had 2 1911s and 3 glocks. Loved the glocks and hated the 1911s.

The 1911s were quite accurate and the triggers were good, but that was it.

I NEVER, EVER , EVER want to own a firearm that can't handle the crappiest ammo available. I found out the hard way that unless you're very picky about your 1911 and ammo you're going to run into reliability problems. Worst yet a few years ago I grabbed my 1911 with the first mag I found to check out whether someone was breaking into the store next to my house. When I tried to chamber a round it jammed. It took me 45 seconds in the dark to clear the malfunction.

1911s typically are twice the weight of glocks. That's great if you have a problem with recoil, but I don't like a 2 pound gun weighing down my pants why I carry it (And everything I own gets carried at one point or another).

So, for me , a glock 21 is a MUCH better choice to a 1911 - Half the price of a reliable 1911, half the weight, double the magazine capacity and just as accurate as any 1911 I've ever shot. Sure the trigger isn't as good, but with a little work it will be great.

I have been toying with buying either:
- Glock 23
- H&K USP Subcompact 40 cal

I am blown away that you turned your Glock 23 into a 40 caliber rifle :D

Check this out, this is what I'm on the waiting list for. It adds a 16 inch barrel so you have better accuracy. I've seen guys pop apples at 100 yards with a 9mm version. I have a drop in barrel that converts my glock 23 to shoot 9mm rounds.

I think its more of the douche bags that own glocks and think they are flawless that people hate. They are great guns, if you like it and feel comfortable with it, BUY IT!!!

Your best bet is to shoot with someone that owns and maintains the gun well (any gun your interested in) shoot it and see if you like it. No one can tell you if YOU are going to like the gun.

I was told how horrible a glock was by a buddy, went and shot one...LOVED it. I've been customizing it ever since, took the guy out that said how horrible it was...and now he loves it and is getting one lol.

I've had guys shoot guns they rented and said "Oh the sights are off" and talk shit about the pistol, then I would say let me see, and shoot 3 inch grouping like "Seems good to me" lol. So you never know.

Beautiful gun. I enrolled in a gunsmithing college and two days a week go learn, hands on, from a master gunsmith buddy of mine and he does custom work on 1911's. They can be really fun to customize.

First: it's not the firearm, it's the user.

Second: THIS attitude is why a lot of 1911 guys hate Glocks. A lot of Glock guys think this and to put it bluntly, they're wrong. My Kimber will chunk anything you stuff into downrange. In over 5000 rounds (prolly closer to 10,000) through it, I have had less than 5 malfunctions that I can remember.

OH, BTW Glock guys... let's talk about crappy ammo... How many hard lead rounds can you shoot through your Glock before blowing it up? I've seen barrels explode in under 40 rounds.

So, don't give me that shit about how Glocks can shoot anything reliably.

No type of pistol or manufacturer makes a perfect gun. They all have flaws - even the almighty Glocks - you just have to be aware or them.

1911's take more training and a break in period. If you put the time in and understand them, they're very very reliable.

Glocks can't handle lead. However, for a semi-auto, they are very forgiving and thus even retards can shoot them.

BTW, I did just buy another Glock (G 30SF) to replace the 27 I traded, so this isn't coming from just a 1911 guy. I shoot everything and am not naive enough to think that a 1911 is better than a Glock for this reason or that, or that a Glock is better than a 1911. It's what you're comfortable with and what you train with.

/edit/ to add to this... If you're new to firearms and are hell bent on a semi-auto, but don't have the time to really train, get a Glock. As I stated above, they are very forgiving (lead aside) and very reliable. Don't get a 1911 just because your friend has one. They're not as forgiving and do require more training time, but if you're willing to put in the range time, they are an awesome weapon.

+1

Everyones hands, wrists, arms and eyes are different. Your posture and grip on the gun will play an important role also. When you go to a range, or borrow someones gun, dont worry too much about accuracy but focus on the recoil and how the gun feels in your hands. If it feels good, then you will learn how to shoot it properly and accurately.

I love my xd9, the glock just didnt fit my grip/hands and didnt feel comfortable.

Sight radius and shouldering have to do with the accuracy improvement, not the longer barrel.

I've seen guys pop plates all day long at 100yds with a typical 9mm with a holo sight. I myself have had 50/50 accuracy on steel gongs at 50yds with the right gun/ammo combo.

Glocks trade off reliability for the inability to shoot cast lead bullets due to the aggressive feed ramp. If you want to shoot cast lead it costs $95 to replace the stock glock barrel with an aftermarket barrel designed to shoot lead (At the cost of a less aggressive feed ramp).

I've been told by some kimber, wilson and other higher end that theirs will shoot 'anything' but then told by similar owners that there were very aggressive hollowpoints that their 1911s absolutely would not feed.

Even with the leading issues, I'll take the 24oz glock with 13+1 capacity over the 42oz 1911 with 8+1 any day of the week :)

An article I came across today that you guys might like...

https://medium.com/i-m-h-o/abf07d93d8e0

The most interesting quote in the article for me was this one...

"We have the Senate to make sure that the big states can’t trample the interests of smaller states. In the same way, we have guns so that our citizens can defend themselves even in the face of a larger aggressor — or multiple aggressors. This happens thousands of times every day. According to the FBI’s Bureau of Justice Statistics firearms are successfully used — defensively — 6,500 times per day. That is once every thirteen seconds. In about 83 percent of these cases the attacker either threatened force, or actually used force first. In only 8 percent of these cases did the defender have to pull the trigger to end the attack. Guns are used eighty times more frequently for defense than they are for aggression, and I would not deny these people the right to defend themselves in this way. This statistic tends to be news to most people, but that’s not surprising. If crimes are halted 92 percent of the time without a shot being fired why would the news media bother to report that (effectively) nothing happened?"

Pretty amazing statistic and not one I have ever read elsewhere.
