Fucking consumerism. Rant inside.

must be the worst fucking business quote I've ever heard in my lifetime.
Not at all... That statement is as true as the sun is hot.

Think about it; the Rich are a few people who are tight with their money. Less than 1/10th of 1% of this world, and almost all of them are extremely thrifty or otherwise they wouldn't be rich.

The Poor, meanwhile, make up 99.9% of this planet and are spend happy as hell.

Since our schools don't properly educate anyone on how to manage their personal finances, this is a problem that is likely to go on for a very long time.

I know which group I'M selling to...

i hear you bro but remember this saying:

sell to the poor and eat with the rich. Sell to the rich and eat with the poor.

If you wanna make monies you gotta sell to the sheepies out there.

LOL wut?!!! What about the people selling high end yachts, private jets, or supercars?

Same here. Sell to the majority and live with the minority.

don't get me wrong here, I fully agree with the first part "sell to the poor and eat with the rich.". But the second part "Sell to the rich and eat with the poor." suggests that you can't make any dough with selling luxury goods or high-end products to rich people.

tight with their money like in spending a couple mil on a house, a mil on an exclusive car, another couple mil on the second and third house?

dunno what world you live in bro. mad monies in luxury goods as well, just a different business model.

Dude, your 20, keep doing what you are doing for now. You're still developing who you are. It's good you think about these things, but if you have to ask you shouldn't just abandon your financial freedom. If you can work from the road you can still travel and explore things that might make you happier while still earning. You think you want to be a park ranger in Africa, find some park or zoo where you can volunteer a few days a week and still get in some work time.

I would be no more impressed that you drove a new bmw than if you drive a 85 v-dub, but you sound like a genuine person, that does impress. On the other hand my grandfather was never one for flash, but, when he bought something he always bought high quality so that he could depend on it for years. He did this with golf clubs, tools, boats and we still have the 66 230sl he bought 25 years ago. Consumerism isn't always a bad thing.

Maybe you could market products to businesses instead of individuals.

You could do something like this, Family travels the world for 11 years.

I live in a world of 7 Billion poor people and only a couple of million millionaires.

Among the millionaires, the vast majority are cheap bastards that DO NOT buy yachts and sportscars... They are eternally thrifty.

The others do, and then aren't millionaires for very long at all. Perhaps 3 years at best.

So... Which market would you want to make CONSISTENT money with? 99.999% of 7 Billion or the other 0.001% that will only be able to spend big dough for 6 months to 1 year max?

but but, they spend a lot on education and healthcare.

also, think about insurance, and financial products, real estate brokers. securities.

they may be thrifty when it comes to buying shit they don't actually need though

OP:

It's awesome you don't want to be a sheep. It was inevitable that you would get a bunch of haters responding to this thread, since the world is full of people who do what society says their supposed to.

I understand you weren't meaning to be offensive to all the mom and pops out there and just expressing you want to live a free life, without stepping all over these kind folks.

Live your dreams...I've been traveling for the better part of 16 years and none of this BS will matter once you're out there. Buy a plane ticket tomorrow and get the fuck out there man. It doesn't cost much more than a plane ticket -- do some content writing or learn SEO to get by.

“Sell to people who drive Rolls Royces and you ride the subway. Sell to people who ride the subway and you drive Rolls Royces.”

is a more fitting quote

The problem is that when I am talking with co-workers about general stuff - world events, weather and other crap there is no problem for me, but when they go:"Hey, you heard that Kattie Price is not happy with her hair extensions?", that's when I just leave.

You're 20... this is what many 20 y.o.'s talk about, celebrity news and all that tmz stuff.

Once you get older and find a different job, the conversations will change.

Sounds like you need to do some traveling. There is a world outside of the West. :)

I know what you mean though, and that's one of the many reasons I prefer living in Thailand over Canada. Everyone's trying to be like the Jones', and everyone is judging each other on how good of a Jones' they are, and it's just ridiculously stupid. I'm only alive once, and I'm not going to spend it doing that.

Some people love the show, and all the power to them. However, from my experience, most hate it. People aren't stupid, and they know what's happening. Take a typical guy, has a wife, couple kids, nice home in the sub-burbs, two vehicles, secure $10K/month job to provide, and also about $400K in debt.

Funny thing is, get one of these guys one-on-one for a few beers, they know what's happening, and they'll almost always fully agree with you on all that consumerism bullshit you ranted about. They'll agree it's retarded to buy a $380 pair of sunglasses, or always ensure their kids have the latest designer clothes, or spend $200/week so their wife can goto the bloody tanning salon. Most I've met hate that life, and agree it's bullshit. Yet, next day off they go for a family shopping trip to the bloody mall. I don't quite get it either.

Anyway, sounds like you just need to do some traveling, and are about the perfect age for it. Go hang out in the mountains of Chile, beaches of Uruguay, a fishing village in Indonesia, or whatever. Don't worry, it's a big world out there, and quite obviously, you're only scratching the surface of it. :)

unless you sell rolls royces
hmm i'm confused

OP: You think too much.

You're right, buying more shit is only a way to make yourself miserable in the long run.

But so is sitting around angsting about consumerism.

They're two sides of the same coin. Live the life you want to live, stop wasting energy on worrying about others.

OP an elegant solution to your anti-consumerism hate is minimalism. Get rid of all your stuff until you just have a laptop, your important documents and clothes.

Be minimalist in mind and body; sleep on a cot, fuck bitches without a condom on, ride around town on a 1 gear bike while sporting an ironic haircut and mustache.

Zig Ziglar didn't say "You can have everything you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want if it is ethical and if it will benefit them", he said You can have everything you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want."

It's not your job to decide whether or not someone should want something, it's your job to give them what they want be it drugs, alcohol, an AK47, or some Acai Berry.

Unless you are homeless or dead you are a consumer to some point. Is having an iPad 2 wrong? HELL NO. Is buying an Ipad 2 after you got a payday loan from Montell Williams a bad idea? Yes, but that won't stop Apple from selling you one.

You aren't going to be able to change the world or other people, so you might as well just go along with it and profit from it. Just stay incognito and don't go crazy.

Give people what they want. If they want to lose weight by sitting on the couch eating pork rinds, then give that to them and profit.

Consumerism: Going to Best Buy at 4AM to buy a Nintendo Wii you don't need on your mom's credit card.

Smart Human Being: Going to best buy to buy an iPad 2 to improve your business.
